Thank you!! But, you know, it's funny, I can't imagine working with a musician and *not* keeping in touch with their listeners. Maybe it's because when I was living in Canada wishing Dar would tour there, Charlie was great about e-mailing me (and the Dar-list) and I really felt in the loop about things, despite being so geographically OUT of the loop. So, from that, I think I just realized how great it feels to have someone on the "inside" think my opinion matters. Beyond that, the artists we work with just have pretty great fans. There are some artists where I think, "Oh man I wouldn't want to deal with their fans" (I helped out at a show where Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead played last week and, much to my chagrin, found myself in the position of having to physically guard the backstage door from a small throng of eager Deadheads who were JUST about to charge the green room when I happened upon the scene! I'm sure that many Deadheads are very cool people but, frankly, these ones frightened me...). So, believe me, you guys make my job very easy. Kerry :) NP: Bruce Cockburn, "The Charity of Night" (Bruce also played at that show last week and so I'm on a total Cockburn kick again... the song "Get Up Jonah" kicks my butt...) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 20:23:53 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] de Lint and Nora Not too long ago, we had discussions about Charles de Lint and the mutual admiration he and Richard share for each other's works. I just started reading de Lint's _Memory and Dream_ and am really enjoying it. Very early on in the novel, there's a mysterious letter written by one character (Kathy) to another (Izzy) that reminds me of "Nora". In Particular, this passage: " ...You can only shoulder so much responsibility for what goes wrong in the world, or for what goes wrong in the lives around you. None of what happened was your fault. To lay blame, there has to be intent, and you just never knew what you were doing until it was too late." Izzy, there is no sin! I'm only a little ways into the book so please, no spoliers. Richard was in superb form, as usual. His guitar playing amazes me as much as his song writing skills and voice. My 18 year old daughter accompanied me, and she does not like "folk music." Well, she had tears in her eyes after actually sitting still and listening to the words. Here is the set list: Beyond the Iron Gate Next Best Western- He said he tried to write a vendetta song- "Deliver me *from* the NBW, but the song rebelled. Transit- I always feel like praising God at the last verse, wow... You Stay Here- Hushed the room. Kenworth of my Dreams Confession- I was gonna ask him about the blue pill, but he ran off after the gig. Oh, well, he wasn't going to tell me anything definitive anyway, we know that. :-) Wisteria- What can I say? Ahhh.... Mary Magdelene- I was just going to request this, and didn't have to ask. :-) Summer Wind, Cotton Dress- He joked it's the Beatles and Dylan's fault that people assume all songs are personal and not possibly fictional. He said his wife loves this song and that it could not be true. Right then is when a guitar string boinggged and someone yin the back laughed " Must be true." My kid got the broken string for me and a man at the next table asked if I was a groupie. I guess so. :-) During restringing, he told the popular accordion joke. Fishing-Inspired by Deportee. Abuelita- He told us the taxi numbering story and how this song came about because of his looking for the #1 taxi. Lazy- What chords, and such skillful playing! She's in Spain, aka Bad Rhyming Song. Cold Missouri Waters- Hushed the room. Shades of Gray- Did they get it? I couldn't tell. Are you Happy Now?- Told how he wrote this in the first two weeks of a happy relationship, which ended shortly thereafter. E: Reunion Hill- Told how he quickly wrote this after Joan's agent asked if he had anything more for her. RS is a smart guy. :-) Opening for him was Jess Klein, whom I had never heard of, has anyone else heard of her? She will open for him in Boston next week, I think she said. I am still on cloud nine, what a lovely birthday present that was! Back to lurking, Roxy ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #40 **********************************
