But for serious, discerning music lovers such as those on this list, may I suggest that you discover her for yourselves post haste. Like most real art of substance, Louise takes more than a casual listen to appreciate. All the subtle details, rich idiosyncracies in her work begin to reveal themselves with each repeated listen, not unlike a great vintage claret. Kudos to Jim Olsen for bringing this wonderful woman to us. Most recently Lucy K sang part of "I Still Miss Someone (not sure if that is what the song is called)." Any suggestions on how to start to learn about his music? Any live albums or "best ofs" or album recommendations? Feel free to respond off list. And I have a really pathetic reason for it, so pathetic in fact that it was necessary to share it here. Go ahead and laugh at me, I can take it. One of my favorite movies of all time is "The Princess Bride" with Carey Elwes playing Wesley. I just mentally linked the male Carey Elwes with the "elwes" part of the name, and voila! Elwestrand became this really handsome blond man in my head. oh, I am so embarrassed. And now that you have brought it up, I confess I still don't know whether you are a man or a woman, but you remain blond in my head! But, I must also confess that it took me several rounds of personal correspondence with my friend Jo Montojo (from the dar-list) before I identified that person's sex. And I am purposely being vague because this is another person who writes so that it remains unclear. (do you do that on purpose, Jo?) Onto musical theory, now... When I was in elemetary school, I played the violin. I didn't read the music, but the teacher would write in the notes as colors and numbers so that each string was a color, and the finger position was a number. In the eighth grade we moved to a new school district, where the teacher would not finger my music for me, and thus ended my musical career. My technique was good, but with no way to process the notes, I simply could not play the music. In college, I tried again to learn to read and play music and it was so frustrating. I took private lessons, and my teacher had me learning really simple pieces and it was agonizing trying to identify the notes with the fingering. After fighting with it for a year, I quit again. (I just couldn't afford to keep paying for lessons just to look at my teacher (mr. Darius Campo), no matter how handsome and incredibly talented he was.) In my dreams, I can play any instrument. I can pick up a guitar and finger the strings, or tickle the ivories of a keyboard, or strum a harp and make beautiful music. In real life, I can sing most music I can hear, but I can't really read the music beyond notes going up and down on the scale indicate singing higher or lower. So when Richard confessed on stage at McCabe's that he couldn't read or write music, it gave me hope that someday I may be able to play something. Maybe when I am retired and have time to really dedicate to it... Oh well, lunch break is over and it's time to go back to work.
