As long as we're on the subject of other great male guitarists, I have to say I also love Livingston Taylor. He is James Taylor's brother, and an excellent musician even without that connection. He sounds a lot like James, but more folky, and does a lot of covers in addition to his own songs. Visit his website at www.livtaylor.com See ya... Got my new issue of The Music Matters Review yesterday...nice back page article from Rockin Ron about RS. Norm! There's a review of Rhino's Harry Chapin release, too! (I cried when I read it). Plus lots more. Quite worth the wait, but it did seem like an awfully long time. NT ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 19:37:13 -0400 From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] Angelic voices Oh, geez, I'm so glad Pat brought up Kate Rusby, because she has the most beautiful voice in the UNIVERSE, and I would have forgotten to mention her if he hadn't. There are three - count 'em, three - folk singers who can sing absolutely anything they want and make me plotz from the sheer gorgeousness of their voices: Kate Rusby, Richard, and Katryna Nields. But The Nields aren't exactly, er, comparable to Richard - at least music-wise - so I highly suggest checking out Kate Rusby, who sings traditional folk ballads like a lovely angel. For those of you who know the song, what's "Shades of Black" about? (If it's "about" anything.) And finally, I guess it's great that Richard is being praised on the Ellis list and Ellis my one and only true amour Paul is being praised on the Richard list . . . the problem is, I don't know which list to write to and gush about more! Aaaaaahhhhhh . . . Ciao! Katie ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Argentina looms in June. RS returns stateside from late June to late July, then back to the Big A. Then the US again for most of Sept. Then again from late Oct to Mid-Nov. At least that's the plan right now! 2. If you're looking for a beautiful voiced male singer, check out Iain Matthews. I think his vocals are magical. PURE & CROOKED and SKELETON KEYS are great, and EXCERPTS FROM SWINE LAKE, which came out last year on Tangible Music in the US, has a drop-dead gorgeous version of Dougie MacLean's "Trail of the Survivor." - -- Charlie PS: Hey, how do I switch the account I get my RS digest on from yhmgt@aol (evil aol!) to charlie@younghunter.com? (If it's "about" anything.) << Well, Larry Campbell's website says this: ___________________ The song was written by Charles Lyonhart and can also be found on his album, "Leap of Faith" (Lyonhart says the song was written for his friend Thomas Jefferson Kaye who produced and worked with artists such as Gene Clark of the Byrds, Loudon Wainwright, Jay and the Americans, Paul McCartney, and Judy Garland). ____________________ Then I did a little digging on Thomas Jefferson Kaye, and it indeed seems that he is among the dearly departed, being mentioned on a site I found called "Dead Rock Stars." Another site had this brief bio: ____________________ The late Thomas Jefferson Kaye was a musician, songwriter and producer responsible for a number of classic pop records, including ? and the Mysterians' "96 Tears," the Shirelles' "Soldier Boy," and Loudon Wainwright III's "Dead Skunk," to name just a few. In 1973, he recorded his first, eponymously-titled solo record, followed a year later by "First Grade." Kaye's final recording was an all-star affair called "Not Alone." ____________________ "Shades of Black, Shades of Blue" would seem to indicate, however, that there are interesting circumstances surrounding Kaye's death. Like, who is the "man in the top hat?" "Go to Gene, I said at that moment" must refer to Gene Clark, but exactly what does the reference mean? Can our friends at Signature shed any light on this? Perhaps the greatest folk guitarist out there, with a voice that could peg him as a James and Livingston Taylor sibling. What's more, there's a Richard connection, too: Wilcox does what's generally considered to be the definitive version of the Cry Cry Cry song "The Kid" on his CD "How Did You Find Me Here," which is one of my Top Five CDs of all time. I can recommend it unhesitatingly . . . there's not a weak track on it. Another great singer/picker (and a relatively recent discovery of mine) is Jim Henry. Again, a Richard connection: his CD "Jacksonville" is available on Richard's label, Signature Sounds, and was produced by Darleen Wilson, who produced "Cry Cry Cry." He's a simply stunning guitar player (the CD has three instrumentals) and has a silky-smooth voice. In fact, if you check out the most recent Signature sampler, there's a track from Jim's latest CD on there. And finally, what list of great singers and guitar players would be complete without a mention of Cheryl Wheeler? Her CD "Driving Home" is also an all-time favorite of mine, and she's not only a great singer and fantastic guitar player, but a wonderfully entertaining live performer as well. I'll stop now. Thank you for helping to keep live music ALIVE!!! "A national folk star and to many the quintessential Boston songwriter: literate, provocative, urbanely romantic." - The Boston Globe "Ellis Paul is a master storyteller. He combines the sensibilities of Bob Dylan, Bill Morrissey and John Gorka and delivers it with a passion that sets him apart in the company of a new breed of songwriters." --Performing Songwriter "Ellis has become one of our quintessential observers, a champion of human dignity in it's many disguises. Ellis Paul's best songs have always had the authenticity and poignancy of snippets of overheard conversation." - --Mountain X press "Speaking of great songwriters...Paul delivers lyrics that read like poetry with a high, clear voice that can be as fragile or tough as the song allows and each one strikes directly at the heart. Very special." -CMJ Ellis' expanding audience should grow even further when his song, "The World Ain't Slowin' Down" from Translucent Soul, is featured in the Farrelly Brothers' (Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary) new blockbuster film--Me, Myself, and Irene--starring Jim Carrey and Rene Zellweger, which will be released in June of 2000. Peter Farrelly, one of the hottest names in Hollywood, handpicked Ellis' song for this film and has called Ellis Paul a "national treasure" in a recent interview.
