All these Canadian posts and no comment from the >original "Oh Canada Girl". Kerry was at home sick for a good chunk of this week and is now trapped under a desk piled absurdly high with the work that accumulated while she was away. Somebody call the fire department... er, an ambulance.... er, SOMETHING! Blame my roommate. She brought a virus home from work and it knocked her out, then my other roommate, then me. For about a week, we referred to our living room as "The Den of Illness." But don't think I'm not enjoying the Canucky posts from afar... even more so with Karen (an EASTERN Canadian!) out and about. And no, I don't say it "oot and aboot". Kerry :) NP: Still Sarah Harmer. Can you imagine? I'm actually listening to a different disc, though. This one, "Songs for Clem", is a CD of classic and traditional songs she recorded as a Christmas present for her dad a few years ago. "Shine On Harvest Moon" is playing right now. Lovin' it. (Her other CD, "You Were Here" is still playing in my car and in my office, though. I'm so obsessive. :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 12:12:00 EDT From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] ellis paul story Lee, thanks for posting your Ellis Paul story! That sounds wonderful! And you're right, he really is a great guy. Seeing him live is such an experience, but if you can't get to see him, the new Live CD is about as close as it gets. I've played mine over and over and it just gets better each time! Anyone who wants to know more about Ellis and his music can check him out at www.ellispaul.com. You can buy the new CD there too. It's a little more expensive than CDNow or somewhere like that, but I think he gets a little more money if you buy from the site. We have the disc for sale at our website (but those in the US should obviously go direct to Sig Sounds as it'll work out cheaper and quicker). We also have a RS competition running at the moment - we have some RS t-shirts, a batch of signed posters (new album), sticker postcards etc. The entry form is on the website at http://www.fishrecords.co.uk best wishes Neil - ---------------------------------------- neil@fishrecords.co.uk http://www.fishrecords.co.uk Suppliers of singer/songwriter, contemporary folk and acoustic music. I try to check out artists recommended by the list. I figure, if they like Richard, they must like comparable talent. However, alot of the recommendations I have checked out fall far short of Richard in two areas: vocal and guitar talent. His voice is so beautiful and smooth and he uses it so well, and his guitar playing, while not neccesarily advanced, is interesting. So, that said, I would love to hear about any artists who you feel are comparable, i.e. have beautiful voices and can play at least at the intermediate level (althought I realize that vocal quality is subjective and that some people don't recognize that what there listening is no more than mediocre guitar work -not a criticism, just reality). I have specifically not mentioned any artists I feel are weak, because I don't want to argue! I just want to find some new favorites. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 13:06:57 -0800 From: Lee Wessman Subject: Re: [RS] Beautiful Voices Mysteriously named Elwestrand wrote: "I would love to hear about any artists who you >feel are comparable, i.e. have beautiful voices and can play at >least at the intermediate level..." Here's five that pop to mind: - --Richard Thompson is a guitarist's guitarist, truly astonishing, and a writer of tremendous songs. I like his voice but it's an acquired taste. - --Pierce Pettis is an excellent guitarist and fine songwriter with a pretty good voice. His best album is "Chase the Buffalo." - --Dougie MacLean of Scotland is a decent guitarist, tremendous songwriter and his voice is as good as they come. A great album is "Marching Mystery." - --Dave Mallet of Maine is a decent guitarist, pretty good singer, and writes beautiful songs that really grow on you. "Parallel Lives" is a fine live collection, and he has a wonderful new album. - --Patty Larkin is a phenomenal guitarist, danged good songwriter and a good singer. Lots of good albums. And lately I've been listening to some of James Taylor's 1990s albums and liking them a lot. - --lee ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 16:02:18 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [RS] Back-up vocals on "Shades of Black, Shades of Blue" Just call me Sherlock Holmes. For some reason, it was floating around that Lucy Kaplansky sings back-up on "Shades of Black, Shades of Blue", the Charles Lyonhart song that appears on the new Richard EP. When I heard the song, however, it sure didn't sound like Lucy to me. So I started asking everyone but, much to my chagrin, no one around here seemed to know (since none of us were on hand when it was recorded). A mystery indeed. But Richard just solved it for me. The vocals belong to a lady named Theresa Williams (who is, in fact, Larry Campbell's wife). Just wanted to clear that up before people started getting their EPs in the mail and were thinking, "That ain't Lucy!" because, you're right, it ain't. Kerry :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 16:30:53 -0700 From: ptpower@juno.com Subject: Re: [RS] Beautiful Voices Elwestrand commented: <<(althought I realize that vocal quality is subjective and that some people don't recognize that what there listening is no more than mediocre guitar work -not a criticism, just reality).>> Am I to infer that you consider *Richard's* guitar-playing mediocre?!? If you're looking for a wonderful voice, I'd recommend Kate Rusby. I don't know that I can comment all that intelligently on her guitar work. If you get the chance to see Nina Gerber play the guitar, do it! She's certainly not a household name, but she probably appears on more records than you're aware of. I remain awestruck at the guitar-playing talent of the late Steve Goodman. Pat ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 16:55:23 -0500 From: "David E. Briggs" Subject: [RS] Beautiful Voices I've got to second Lee's recommendation of Pierce Pettis. I saw him live last time he was in Chicago and was blown away. I only have his last two CD's (Lee, is "Chase the Buffalo" out of print?) and I think "Everything Matters" is a must have for anyone who loves singer/songwriters. If you're looking for a good female voice I would check out Kim Richey. She's not folk, more alt-country I guess, but she's a good songwriter and a great vocalist. I think it is out of print. His former label really screwed him over, is what I've heard. Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #19 **********************************
