It wasn't the 600-seat amphitheater, but the little cabaret probably held about 100 people, and it was packed. I got there a little late, but still got a spot in the 3rd row. Has anyone else noticed that the first row is a little too overwhelming in these small-ish venues? - -Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 17:34:45 -0400 From: "Norman A. Norman ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 17:28:29 -0400 From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] Richard hits the Pioneer Valley airwaves Hey, did any of you catch Richard on Valley Folk (WFCR) last night? I was driving to a Maggies show when he came on, and after pulling over to the side of the road, bounding up to the police station, and calling home on their pay phone to ask someone to tape it, I sat in my car, just grinning foolishly and listening to Richard. I left just after "Transit," to get a decent place in line (and wouldn't you know, doors didn't open until 10:05, so I *could* have heard the whole darned thing), but my mother caught almost the whole thing on tape, so I'll listen to that tonight. Speaking of Sunday night and folk music, I keep discovering great new shows in what I thought was a completely folk-dead region of radio waves. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving to Northampton one Sunday night when I accidentally turned to 91.7 and heard the encouraging, crackly sounds of an acoustic guitar pushing through lots of static. The music instantly disappeared as I passed the Bridge Road cemetery (something very creepy about that . . . ), so I turned around and drove back towards Leeds, waiting to find out what the heck I was listening to. It turned out to be the "Sunday Night Folk Festival" on the UConn station, hosted by Susan Forbes Hanson - cool! Now my Saturday nights ("Valley Folk"), Sunday mornings ("Intrepid Folk Show" on WOZQ), Sunday nights, and Monday mornings ("Acoustic Cafe" on WMUA) are all covered. My goal is to come up with enough random, scattered folk shows to fill up the whole week. I can make "Katie's Guide For Folk-Starved Inhabitants of the Pioneer Valley Who Don't Have Tape Players in their Cars," and sell it for a hefty profit. Discounts for Richard-listers, of course. Harry and Big John Wallace do a fantastic "Mr. Tanner"! Harry introducion to "I Miss America" is also priceless, dedicating the third verse to Fred Silversman ("canned laughter"). WWUH in Hartford has folk music 6-9 a.m. seven days a week (if you count blue grass on thursday and saturday). I think you can catch it, if not in northampton, at least springfield. I think. They are also online. Ed McKeon is kind of an initial proud patron of Richard's. Lisa Davis (extremely infuriated that she didn't know about that, and who damn well woudl have taped it!) -- I can just about manage getting Valley Folk down here in Meriden, CT. IN certain rooms of the house! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 23:30:14 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] WWUH Lisa wrote in response to Katie: >>Where do you live? I probably wouldn't be able to get it-- my place (in central Amherst) has horrible reception. I have trouble getting WRSI.
