Are there any listers planning on going to the Peterbporough, NH show or the Rosendale, NY show? I'm up in Ottawa right now, but am moving back to Halifax at the end of April. Since chances are slim that Richard will ever get to Eastern Canada, I'm considering one last road (er, bus) trip before I move. I just have to believe that there will be a lot more this time around, publicity or not. I saw Buddy & Julie Miller there last week and the place was nearly full. That surprised me as well, but maybe it shouldn't have. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2000 16:28:23 -0400 From: Karen Parker Subject: Re: [RS] road trips... I don't consider Ontario "Eastern Canada," but I guess it all depends on your point of view. :-) Who knows, though, I may be back in Ottawa, or some other random Ontario city, by September. *sigh*... The life of a co-op student. Just out of curiousity, are there many other Canadian fans on this list? I first discovered Richard through Cry Cry Cry (who I found out about 'cause I was already a big Dar fan). I've seen him twice - Once in Newark, NJ, with Cry^3, and also at the Ottawa Folk Fest this past summer, where he performed with Dar and Lucy and did some solo stuff in workshops. I wish more American folk artists would tour up this way. :-( Karen (Who thinks Richard Should play at the Stan Rogers Folk Fest [http://www.stanfest.org] this summer! I could actually get to that gig!) We knew this was coming!! Bill 602P will permit the Federal Govt. To charge a 5 cent charge on every delivered E-mail. Please read the following carefully if you intend to stay online and continue using E-mail: The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the government of the United States attempting to quietly push through legislation that will affect your use of the Internet. Under proposed legislation the US Postal Service will be attempting to bill E-mail users out of "alternate postage fees." Bill 602P will permit the Federal Govt. to charge a 5 cent surcharge on every E-mail delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington DC lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law. The US Postal Service is claiming that revenue due to the proliferation of e-mail is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have seen their recent ad campaign “There is nothing like a letter." Since the average person receives about 10 pieces of E-mail per day in 1998, the cost to the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents per day, or over 180 dollars per year, above and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that this would be money paid directly to the US Postal Service for a service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is democracy & interference. You are already paying an exorbitant price for "snail mail" because of bureaucratic efficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from New York to Buffalo. If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker with E-mail, it will mark the end of the "free" Internet in the United States. One Congressman, Tony Schnell (r) has even suggested a "twenty to forty dollar per month surcharge on all Internet service" above and beyond the government's proposed email charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story, the only exception being the Washingtonian which called the idea of E-mail surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come" (March 6th 1999 Editorial). Don't sit by and watch your freedoms erode away! Send this E-mail to EVERYONE on your list, and tell all your friends and relatives to write to their congressman and say "No!" to Bill 602-P. It will only take a few moments of your time, and could very well be instrumental in killing a bill we don't want. >> - ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- Return-Path: Received: from rly-yh02.mx.aol.com (rly-yh02.mail.aol.com [172.18.147.34]) by air-yh02.mail.aol.com (v70.20) with ESMTP; Tue, 04 Apr 2000 17:27:23 -0500 Received: from garnet.sover.net (garnet.sover.net [209.198.87.53]) by rly-yh02.mx.aol.com (v71.10) with ESMTP; Tue, 04 Apr 2000 17:27:09 -0400 Received: from fpfzqlga (pm3a22.bratt.sover.net [207.136.199.246]) by garnet.sover.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id RAA28576 for ; Tue, 4 Apr 2000 17:27:06 -0400 (EDT) Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2000 17:27:06 -0400 (EDT) Comments: SoVerNet Verification (on garnet.sover.net) fpfzqlga from pm3a22.bratt.sover.net [207.136.199.246] 207.136.199.246 Tue, 4 Apr 2000 17:27:06 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <003601bf9e7b$883676e0$f6c788cf@fpfzqlga> From: "Louise Taylor" To: Subject: For your info and judgement (E-mail Bill 602P) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2314.1300 ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #8 *********************************
