When I hung out with Harvey Reid last year at the autoharp gathering I always go to, he made me a mix cd from his laptop, and there were about three Francey songs on it. I've been a fan ever since. I really like The Waking Hour, and his live cd called The First Set, but he just came out with a new album last month, and I still have a few of his albums yet to purchase. Nearer to Christmas, you might want to purchase his Christmas album, where he's accompanied largely by piano arrangements. Also don't miss Far End Of Summer, as that album has several great songs on it, like Green Fields and February Morning Drive. Enjoy whatever you start off with. Say It Ain't So... Well, I think the Jukebox world is a bit different now as not everyone had a jukebox in their living rooms. Or multiple Jukeboxes. Or Jukeboxes which fit into your pocket. I believe the Spotify's of the world lead me purchase more from the artists than if it didn't exist. This David Francey thing is a great example. I've been listening to the Torn Screen Door album all day as I worked and I'm liking it a lot. Maybe I'll catch a show next time he comes around or I may even pick up the actual record. Regardless, it's very unlikely I would have purchased the record anyway just off a recommendation. And here's the kicker to this whole thread.... Spotify made the recommendation! It recommended a song by David Francey because "you listened to Richard Shindell". So, I couldn't agree more about the royalty issue. It bugged me for quite a while when I was first introduced to (really any) subscription services (artists are not killing it on Pandora, either). That is why I specifically support artists outside of Spotify (whether it be kickstarter, buying merch, concert tickets and buying the records I truly love). I realize I'm probably in the minority here, though. However, like it or not, subscription based services are only going to continue to get stronger and in 5 years time I don't think there will be much of a market for buying even digital media (at least enough for artists to survive on). Artists are going to have to tour more and find more creative ways of making money (Shindell doing the "fundraiser" for Not Far Now is probably a good example). And by the way, if you buy used music (whether it be ebay or your local thirft shop), the artists gets zero money. At least with Spotify, it's *something*.
