Another religious one? And as a Catholic, I'm pretty ashamed to admit I had never heard of Merton but the song led me to read about him. Richard is a sort of teacher, I've learned quite a bit from his music! As Vanessa has so eloquently pointed out, I too think the song is an apology. I've been in a car with this person where you begin to wonder why you're traveling with such an insensitive clod and you want to call them an idiot but knowing they have the wheel (your life) in their hands! I love the verse 'how I went too far' both literally and figuratively. And these verses, 'I remember everything' and yet 'how I missed that turn I'll never know.'
