One of the things I noticed when our family of four moved to western PA was the civility. in our little town, car horns are tapped lightly to say hello and rarely used to exhort a slow-reacting car to move it. Other drivers frequently "let you in" when trying to enter a lane, and usually wave in response to similar gestures. In the city, people are inclined to actually listen for an answer to the inquiry, "How're you don'?" Not that Pittsburghers are better then New Yorkers, by any means, it's just that there isn't quite as much propinquity (ask Richard), so you don't always find yourself with someone's newspaper, or child, or cell phone, in your face... So, generally, our crowds are more "folk-friendly", too...I am a very civil dude in a folk setting, but, as I've pointed out, I like to sing along on a few songs, and i don't feel that my measured vocalisations detract from Richard's performance...i don't expect a lot of you to agree...When I volunteered at Clearwater (as a Peacemaker), I tried to be cognisant of both the sedentary fan and the wildly exuberant dancers (of which I am a member), but it's a fine line...I remember the Felice Brothers' raucous set and my fellow Peacemakers' efforts to quell the whirling dervishers...we settled on an area stage left that allowed the seated folkz to have a clear line-of-sight...but it was all quite civil. Bridey and I occasionally volunteer for The Calliope Folk Society in Pittsburgh...about the worst thing that anyone's ever said to us is, "We're subscribers. We know where our seats are..." So, again, in these parts we tend to get new trends about 10 years after the Boston-NY-Washington corridor (we can legally drive and talk on cell phones, but driving and texting has been outlawed), so perhaps all things technological will eventually render us incapable of thoughtful human interaction. We're ushering at this weekend's Lunasa show -- a fabulously talented Irish group -- so maybe people would ordinarily be inclined to boisterousness (as, for some of us, all of March is an excuse to celebrate St. Patrick and his brethren), but, given the venue, the Carnegie Lecture Hall and its design better suited -- as Gillian Welch once quipped, "for a lecture on electromagnetism", we'll probably just witness a lot of toe-tapping and broad smiles... Enjoying the Lovely Snow, Pedro in PA ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #438 ************************************
