Hey All, Couple of things--because my posts are coming in all screwy and I really cant tell who said what first, I think the names in RH already existed, and are repeated but not named by the widow. I dont envisage her as a tragic cartographer, naming places at will. "Reunion Hill" may be a little pat, but the notion of it overlooking a main road travelled on foot or horseback makes sense to me. Plus, if the song were indeed written with Joan Baez in mind, then pat and corny would be apropos. And although not evidenced in the lyrics, it has the feel of a Civil War song, I just realized that it never says it explicitly (or implicitly, for that matter). The comparative death tolls for wars on American soil as pointed out, certainly bears this out, though why she would fine "golden rings" and not also skeletal remains, I am not sure. The Civil War is still very much a living part of this country's history, in a way in which the Revolutionary War is not. Racism, bigotry and fights for equality still exist and the Confederate flag is still flown, but the Revolutionary War has been reduced to flame-broiled meats and carbonated beverages, even though the protagonists of each war has his birthday reduced to a mattress sale. Well, this is kind of flip-a-coin territory for me. I can come up with many reasons to vote for either of these songs. If I could play just 2 RS songs to someone to introduce them to him, this would be a good pair. "Reunion Hill" is beautiful, evocative, and heartbreaking. But "Transit" is all of that too, and wins my final vote. Aside from having been at a Cry3 show, I was unfamiliar with Richard's music when I first heard "Transit" on the radio. It just completely grabbed me. I thought, "that's an incredible piece of songwriting," and immediately sought out more of RS. I can't really imagine him doing "Lawyers, Guns & Money," because (among other reasons), it's too iconic a Zevon song, akin to RS doing "Werewolves of London" or "Excitable Boy." And "Carmelita" already has its definitive cover version (Ronstadt). What I'd like to hear him do if he was going to go down the Zevon path is something obscure, like Peter's wonderful suggestion of "Accidentally Like a Martyr," or "Desperados Under the Eaves" or "The French Inhaler." I has a big {{DOH!!}} moment the other day while listening to Elton John's "Rocket Man". I've been listening to EJ since I was in second grade, so I haven't internalized a lot of Taupin's lyrics as an adult. I had a memorial service AND a funeral all in one week and Rocket Man is playing while I'm on the PC during this festive time. I suddenly realized that it's not just about a space man, it's about loss in general. And I think it's gonna be a long long time Till touch down brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone That COULD be an astronaut *or* someone in the "Free Falling" mode Tom Petty speaks of. There are a lot of the old EJ ballads I would love RS to cover. Many songs from Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across the Water and Honky Chateau. In particular "Levon" "or "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters". Tiny Dancer is one of my favorite songs of all time, but too iconic to cover. Maybe an older Rolling Stones ballad like "Far Away Eyes". "Dead Flowers" would be great, but then he'd be going up against Townes Van Zandt who covered it perfectly. I don't understand why he's covered Gram Parsons SO WELL in concert yet that didn't make his covers album. I would love "Hickory Wind" or "Love Hurts" as a duet with Lucy K. And again with the Cry, Cry, Cry, covers I'm not sure why of all REM's catalog they picked up "Fall on Me". Good song, but there were better choices. "Losing my Religion" and "The One I Love" come to mind. Wouldn't mind him revisiting Springsteen, either. ~ Carol ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2013 14:45:43 -0400 From: Pete Jameson Subject: [RS] Vacillation Vanessa, It's funny, I've always thought of Transit as Richard's most, well, exceptional song -- the imagery is profound.
