I was thinking about whether age matters as to which songs I like. At least to me, I'll always have a soft spot for his older ones, the ones that caught my ear and drew me to his music in the first place. But I do love the majority of songs on Not Far Now. Maybe it's a combo of everything to age, which album you first heard and even where you are in your life as to which songs you're more attached to. Who knows? Courier (over Nora) 2. Reunion Hill (over Mary Magdalene) The hardest choice of the bunch -- or maybe of all the choices in all rounds as these are my top 2 favorite RS songs 3. Fishing (over Transit) 4. You Stay Here (over Wisteria) As for the talkers at shows...don't get me started. I don't mind when someone makes a quick comment between songs but the constant chatter gets old. I agree that asking an usher to deal with it is better than dealing with it yourself. I don't understand why people pay money to see a concert and then miss it by talking the whole time. I used to usher a lot of shows at the Calvin theater in Northampton MA. I worked MANY shows for the first 5 or 6 years after it reopened as a music venue (in '98). It was a volunteer gig, as are many ushering gigs, as far as I know. We certainly didn't get enough "pay" to deal with some of the stuff we had to put up with. Yes, I got some perks like seeing other shows for free without having to work the extra hours (often 2 -3 hours more than the show itself). And I saw some amazing shows when I ushered, including Cry3 and RS with Joan Baez. But honestly, I gave it up because I just couldn't deal with the rude and/or drunk audiences. It didn't happen a lot but it was enough to wear me out. The funny thing is that the younger crowds were not the rude ones, it was the older crowds that got to me (and dare I say, "older" often meant my contemporaries). I love Richard Thompson but, after a 60 year old woman (not a contemporary), who stood 5"1"pulled her fist back to punch me because I asked her to put her camera away (per RT's request), I swore I would never work an RT show again. Now I pay to see his shows and hope that the drunk ones don't ruin it for me. At least I had the bouncers on my side during the rough shows I ushered and I had the "authority" to ask to have someone removed. I miss seeing so many free shows, even with the extra hours it requires and sometimes think about volunteering again but I just can't bring myself to do it. I do miss being at the Calvin so often though as it gets great shows. They also seem to get fewer of the rowdy ones these days. I suspect the trouble with rowdy audiences didn't make make the bottom line profitable enough. Bring on the final four! Why is it totally unacceptable to talk/sing/clap/yell at classical music concerts, and yet people feel it's totally OK at non-classical concerts? It's like the music is not "serious" enough to get your respect and undivided attention. As if it is not as hard to compose and perform non-classical music as it is classical. Probably because at a classical concert, the conductor would stop the concert and let people know they need to be silent, in no uncertain terms. Although I'm sure this problem has spread to classical audiences as well. Folk/pop/rock performers are too nice or casual in their approach to the audience, so people think it's OK to do whatever they want during a performance. And they know there will be no consequences. To me, it's disrespectful to the performers, as well as other audience members. Just my 2 cents! John ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2013 20:38:49 -0500 From: John McDonnell Subject: [RS] Final Four-brutal Hey All, So its the Final Four--hard as ever. 1. Nora vs Courier 2. Mary Magdalene vs. Reunion Hill 3. Transit vs. Fishing 4. You Stay Here vs. Wisteria So the first three are women and religion v men and conflict; the last a battle of emotional tugs of war. Very tough. The choices are so close--its like picking one supermodel over another. That said, I am going with Nora over Courier, for the same reason I would take Heidi Klum over Giselle Bundchen: I hate the Patriots. I go with Mary Magdelene over Reunion Hill, but was not as close for me. I think I got soured on the marching band version of RH on the album, and although a touching portrait, I like the songs view of MM and Jesus as two adults in an adult relationship. I think he hints at Jesus being a commitment-phobe, which I think is funny (I'm the Messiah, and I cant be tied to just on woman, baby), but in a serious way it portrays Jesus as a man and MM as a woman--not a prostitute or woman of loose morals--in love but also doomed. A secular tragedy. On Transit v Fishing, as with YSH v. Wisteria I am going purely subjective. I have never been interrogated in the menacing way of the song, but I have been pulled aside by the authorities and questioned at the airport--I was a young Irish man traveling light to England. They were looking for potential terrorists (IRA)--I was just going to a wedding for the weekend. I was asked if I had "ever been in trouble before" the clear implication being that I was in trouble now, despite the fact that I had done nothing but possess an Irish passport (which was not even necessary for travel to England back then). So I connect with that in a way different from the nun and the well-insured horde. A squeaker, nonetheless. The last matchup gave me fits, but I just had to go with the one with which I had a personal connection--and a personal connection different from that when I first heard it a few years ago (I am still a rookie, I suppose). It is indeed the one that makes me cry, as RG said. In short then, its 1. Nora (over Courier) 2. Mary Magdalene (over Reunion Hill) 3. Fishing (over Transit) 4. Wisteria (over You Stay Here). For some reason, I think all of my choices will lose....... John McD ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2013 21:51:36 -0500 From: "Mr. Kevin B. The decision more or less came down to a coin toss: the lyrics of You Stay Here versus that absolutely haunting instrumental bit (whistles? pipes? a little of both?) around 3m10s into Sparrows Point. Doing a seeding, I think, gives too much importance to how a song did in previous rounds -- and some songs, by virtue of having gotten First Round byes -- would unfairly have fewer overall votes. And some songs may have benefitted by weaker competition. In this new plan, everyone would just list their Elite Eight from favorite to least (1 to 8) and each person's #1 would get 8 votes, #2 would get 7 votes, down to their #8, which would get 1 vote. Then I'd just tally up all the votes for each song, and the top four would proceed to the Final Four. I think that makes sense.
