My picks: 1. Nora (over May). Nora is a strong contender for me, and this was an easy choice. 2. The Next Best Western (over Reunion Hill). Kills me to pick here, but I am going with TNBW was the 5th song of RS' that I heard. I know because I heard "Confession" on WFUV and thought it was interesting. Then I heard AYHN, and I bought "Courier." By TNBW, I was thinking "This guy is the s--t." The mix of symbolic and actual, sacred and secular essentially drew me in to his songwriting in a way that the other songs I heard did not. They piqued my interest, obviously, but TNBW really spurred greater listening. 3. Mary Magdalene (over last Fare of the Day). 4. Wisteria (over State of the Union). 5. Fishing (over I Saw My Youth Today). 6. Transit. (over Waiting for the Storm). 7. Courier (over Che Guevara T-Shirt). Another tough choice here, but I like the notion of the artist/writer/singer as a courier--guardian of the word. Its a dimension to the song that just, just tips it past the linear narrative of Che Guevara T-Shirt. 8. Sparrows Point (over You Stay Here). This was my toughest choice, so I went purely subjective on it. I have never been a war time refugee, but I am an immigrant, and I am still, after hundreds(??) of listenings, struck by the lines: Their heads bowed low, their hopes not high Their hearts weaned of their homes Their pockets full of photographs Their eyes full of goodbyes So.....SP it was--by a nose. Or a beak. You know what I mean. I graduated from high school that spring. Richard was playing at a concert series called Concerts Under the Stars, which still takes place in Upper Merion, PA. But my friends and I weren't there to see Richard. None of us had ever heard of him before. We were there to see the main act, Susan Werner. Richard was the opener. My friends and I were pretty far back, so I couldn't see Richard very well. I could only hear. I remember he played "Are You Happy Now?", "Mary Magdalene", and "Reunion Hill". The latter two made enough of an impression on me that I distinctly recall thinking, "Boy, this guy is good," and "He sure writes a lot of songs from a woman's perspective." Susan Werner, I find, can be very hit or miss with her live shows. That was a fairly off night for her, and my friends and I eventually became so fed up with the fact she kept hitting clunkers on the piano she was playing that we got up and left about halfway through her act. (Susan has been responsible for both some of the best and some of the worst folk concerts I've seen over the years. Go figure.) Every folkie I recount this story to responds in the exact same way: "Richard was opening for Susan? Are you *sure*?" Yes, I am totally sure, but for this post I decided to look online for details of the show (the exact date, in particular). Perhaps it was just the long absence, but I thought that--musically, at least--this was one of the best Richard performances I've seen in years. In keeping with the last few times I've seen him, there was a lot less bantering with the audience than I'm used to. But, as much as I love and enjoy the interaction, there's only so many times one can hear the same stories and jokes, so perhaps the decrease in banter isn't a bad thing. ;) As for the band . . . wow. Really, just . . . wow. I've heard Lincoln and Marc accompany Richard live more times than I care to count, and I've often had mixed feelings about the result. They're all such extraordinary musicians in their own right, but there have been shows where I've found Marc's live chops too overpowering for Richard's mostly-acoustic style. But now that Richard has fully embraced an electric, bluesy sound, the lineup is *perfectly* suited. Heaven! As Sue mentioned, Richard let Marc loose and he ripped the place apart. In a good way. This was not a case of "solo musician with a few backing musicians," this was a straight-up rock and roll band. Extraordinarily, beautifully, oh-my-word-have-I-mentioned-how-much-I-liked-it, solidly rockin'. Joe is the newbie of the group, but his percussion added an energy and drive that I really appreciated. Lincoln was fabulous as ever. For me, one of the highlights of the evening was their spirited rendition of Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain Blues," followed by Richard's interpretation/appreciation of the lyrics. (The one example of extended dialogue that I recall from the whole show). They killed it! I'm sorry that I didn't attempt to meet any other list-ers. I did ask a few people sitting near me (who seemed to know his music reasonably well) if they were on the list, but got only puzzled looks in return. Because I ended up going alone at the last minute (lord, my DC friends have lousy taste in music!), I was able to sneak into a seat right up front, stage Marc. I was the redhead in the bright red coat, in case anyone was paying attention. As a parting thought, it occurred to me last night that I am now just about the age that Richard was when I first discovered him. Not sure how that is possible, as I'm certain that I haven't aged a day . . . :D The long-lurking, Amy p.s. This was the first time that I heard "Your Guitar" live. For some reason I just think of Rad as having been on accordion but yes, of course, Rad would also do piano. Thanks for jogging my memory on this one. :) On Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 8:19 PM, RFC wrote: > Not Rad? > > On Feb 24, 2013, at 4:48 PM, Vanessa Wills wrote: > > > I don't think I've ever seen RS with a pianist before. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2013 19:48:27 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Richard at Iron Horse (2/21/13) Thanks for the show report, Norman. I liked the exclamation marks after "Careless". That song should always be written this way! According to Richard's site that was Clifford Carter on piano. Did he accompany every song? I don't think I've ever seen RS with a pianist, before. Interesting. - --V On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 9:18 PM, Norman Johnson wrote: > Richard played a wonderful show at the Iron Horse. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2013 17:08:42 -0500 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] My First Blue Divide Ron wrote: > Just to get a sense of an early RS set-list from those days, here's what > he played at Tim Blixt's cabin concert on 10/29/95. > > She's in Spain and I'm in Pain > Easy Street > Sonora's Death Row > Mary Magdalene > Making Plans > Arrowead .......Those weren't in the cannon, yet. I do distinctly remember having "May" tried out on me, along with the Dolly cover, at the Iron Horse which was 1996+. His daughter was still a baby, I remember him talking about her during the show. ...CL ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2013 19:02:59 -0500 From: Pete Jameson Subject: [RS] Veteran Listener -- Che Supporter Carol, You can have Courier -- it's too maudlin for me...I love, love, love Che for the romance, the dramatic tension, and the evocation of La Luna...so there. I also saw him perform at a free outdoor park concert in Palo Alto, and in a freezing room in a community center in the same town, around that same time. Wish I could figure out when those dates were.... Does anyone know of a live show date list anywhere on the Internet? I'm pretty sure I have setlists and details archived in my emails somewhere, but I've changed computers and email addresses multiple times over the years.
