The room had a low ceiling and the stage was a rather nice rug. Rad Lorkovic was there, too. I think he opened with "A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress" and did a lot from Blue Divide. My easily-accessible yet incomplete archives of this list only go back as afar as 1999, but I know I did post about a conversation Richard, Rad and I had afterwards about "Fishing". Maybe that was on Folk Music Digest, though. Christine mentioned "Deportees" as a favorite. That (and Lawrence, KS) are ones I am especially fond of that live when Sara Milonvich is involved. Love when she adds that harmony and fiddle. I am also particularly fond of Joe Jenck's take on "Deportees." My favorite Woody Guthrie song, by far. I'd listen to Joe Jencks sing the phone book. Will check out the recommendation on Jez Lowe if it's a natural fit for a Tanglefoot fan. The name I know, the music I do not. - -jc in pa btw, The Outlaws... holy crap, that takes me back. Smuggling Stroh's beer and botas full of Boone's Farm into the Johnstown War Memorial Arena (where the movie Slap Shot was filmed) in our tube socks, "Green Grass and high Tides" encore where all the band comes out and plays guitar... saw a video on Facebook not too long ago that they still do this. Me, I no longer even own a bota. >> My personal favorite probably remains "Sonora's Death Row," though. << I love it, too, but he doesn't bring much to the song that isn't identical to almost every other cover of the song. I feel the same about the ubiquitously-covered "Pancho & Lefty," which, if I never hear it covered again, will be too soon. He was backed by Lincoln S. on base, Mark S. on electric guitar, Clifford somebody on piano, and a percussionist. Richard begun with two trucking songs - Kenworth and The Next Best Western - and closed with Are You Happy Now and Transit. Transit really worked with the full band - Richard had "democrats and republicans, but mostly Republicans" going into the vortex. Along the way, he played Mavis, Clara, Juggler in Traffic, Careless (!!), Deer on the Parkway, a blues song, and a few others. Richard got a little lost during Mavis and repeated at least one of the verses, but that bird eventually went free. I'm sure Bernadette, Georgette, and others can fill in other details.... We moved to smoe.org in early 2000, I think, and for a few years before that, we were hosted at grassyhill.org along with Dar-list (Tom Neff, do you know when we made the move there)? And for a couple of years before that, the list was hosted, I believe, at MageNet.com. I was thrilled to discover a wisteria-covered arbor when we bought our house a few years ago.) > 2. Balloon Man > I Saw My Youth Today I Saw My Youth Today. This required a second listen. The first time, I wrote "Gosh, no real opinion here. If I have time, I'll listen to the pairing again and see if I'm swayed. Otherwise, I'm abstaining." The second time through, this song had a slight edge. Not sure why. > 3. Fenario > Reunion Hill Reunion Hill. Going with the song that speaks to me about parenting and the balance of protecting your children and letting them find their own path. But State of the Union is great social/political commentary. > 6. Sparrows Point > Cancion Sencilla Cancion Sencilla. I don't understand most of it, but it's pretty. :) > 7. Transit > Summer Wind, Cotton Dress Transit. One of my favorite songs ever. I love how the story meanders, just like the highway. And the final verse gets me every time. Summer Wind, Cotton Dress is great, but it gets stuck in my head, and then I feel slightly disturbed walking around belting out this peppy song about an extra-marital affair. (It could have won in a different pairing.) > 8. Fishing > Abuelita Fishing. Another favorite. Such a great painting of such a strongly defined character. Poor Abuelita. It would have won in many of these other pairings, but not this one. > 9. The Next Best Western > On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis The Next Best Western. A song about driving, religion, and the vastness of America. Hard to beat that! (Though this was close, and I do credit the other song for my learning what a fleur-de-lis is. Aside: I'm impressed by the Sparrows Point version -- so much less nasal than the one on Courier!) > 10. Money for Floods > Che Guevara T-Shirt Che Guevara T-Shirt. Money for Floods is growing on me, but I love the other. > 11. Nora > The Weather The Weather. Nora is also growing on me, but still god-awful depressing. > 12. May > Kenworth of my Dreams Kenworth of My Dreams. Aargh! This was close. But May is a new song for me, and Kenworth is an old favorite. (I'm discovering I have a soft spot for driving songs. Reminding me of family road trips when I was a kid?) > 13. The Courier > The Things That I Have Seen The Things That I Have Seen. This was a virtual tie, until my husband walked in while I was listening to the second song in the pairing and said "Oh yeah, you gotta vote for this one!" ;) > 14. You Stay Here > Are You Happy Now You Stay Here. I love Are You Happy Now (especially live) because it's fun, but the other is haunting. > 15. Waiting for the Storm > Juggler Out in Traffic Juggler Out in Traffic. This was hard. I like the stories in both songs, and they're both so different. The inclusion of the word "centrifuge" was my decider. > 16. Arrowhead > Last Fare Of The Day Arrowhead. It's a hard one to beat for me. (But re-listening to Last Fare of the Day reminded me how much I love the chorus. "I know it well, this old ballet..." But what's with "the heavens give" in that last one? A bunch were slam dunks, and a few were close, including our first one-point loss. Sorry, "Juggler Out in Traffic" . . . there were three people who voted for you last round who didn't vote at all this round. Two of the first-round byes got knocked out quickly: "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" and "Are You Happy Now." And "Abuelita" had the misfortune of going up against a likely tournament juggernaut in "Fishing," so its wild card reprieve didn't last long. I'll have the Sweet Sixteen bracket posted shortly.
