Wisteria(over Ascent) Just such a beautifully haunting song, and perfect dadgad accompaniment. Not even close, for me. Few songs in the Shindell catalog would beat Wisteria for me personally. 2. I Saw My Youth Today (over Balloon Man) Balloon man just never did much for me, other than the fact that it was a new RS song when we were thirsting for them. Maybe passing the age of 50 has made ISMYT more endearing to me than it once was, too. 3. Reunion Hill(over Fenario ) Nothing touches Reunion Hill for me. Nothing. Although if all you've ever heard is the full-blown studio version, you need to hear it as many different ways as possible... slow, faster, solo, trio, duo... 4. By Now (over Mary Magdalene) I expect to be a minority voice on this, but the creepiness gets more of a reaction from me than MM does. 5. State of the Union(over There Goes Mavis ) Neither one would ever be one I'd yell out a request for, but the original take on SOTU still gets me. 6. Sparrows Point (over Cancion Sencilla) Love the sketchy story, and in part for purely nostalgic reasons. It's one I listened to a lot when Sparrow's Point was the ONLY Shindell release not counting Fast Folk. 7. Summer Wind, Cotton Dress (over Transit) Tough call, but I like singing the chorus a little better. From a guitar point of view, they're both fun to play, once you get the groove down... getting to that point can sometimes be painful for me. :) 8. Fishing (over Abuelita) Most difficult choice here yet for me. Both resonate with me; it might be the single line of power of the fountain pen and the governmental metaphors there that pushed this slightly over the edge for me. I also think Fishing is more effective live, for me personally. 9. The Next Best Western (over On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis) If it was purely the guitar part, this would be swapped, OASOF-d-L has always been a personal favorite when it comes to the accompaniment.) Back in the C3 days, Richard would sometimes talk about NWB song having been written on or about the western half of I-80 in PA, and that, too, might have been a factor for me here. Lot of late night drives on that road myself. (He once made a quip about the dead deer you see on the side of the road there having died from despair... of course, I believe I heard him say this at a NJ show, not a PA one.) 10. Money for Floods(over Che Guevara T-Shirt ) Another tough call. A rare instance where I like where the recorded or "final" version of the song landed more than the earliest incarnation of it. 11. The Weather (over Nora) I don't have a big rationalization here. In listening to both, I wanted to hear The Weather a second time. 12. May(over Kenworth of my Dreams) I sometimes hate you, selection committee. Even though in the grand scheme of things, this was not that tough a call for me. May is damn work of art - but KOMD is SO fun to play if you have a good harmony singer. Or, hell, even just an enthusiastic harmony singer. 13. The Courier(over The Things That I Have Seen) To me, Courier is still possibly the definitive RS song, a bar set high and early. Not many of his many, many well-crafted lines work as well as the imagery of the hands pulling the strings... 14. You Stay Here (over Are You Happy Now) Can't say I'd care all that much if I never heard AYHN again. I know it has earned a soft spot in many hearts by the nature of it being their introduction to Richard, but I've heard it enough now. (At the risk of offending a lot of people here, I feel pretty much that way about the entire Beatles catalog.) 15. Waiting for the Storm (overJuggler Out in Traffic) Again, not one I feel strongly about one way or the other. Juggler has never done much for me, but Storm is one I sometimes listen to and think "hmm, I forget about this one. Let's hear it again." 16. Arrowhead(over Last Fare Of The Day) Very slight edge for me here. I sometimes listen to "Courier" and relive watching the drummer leading them in to that one, out in Mamaroneck. (Still slightly bummed that we only got to 2 of the 3 shows being recorded for that disc, but... given we do live a good 4 hours away, I suppose we should be proud to have made both outpost and one of the Emelin nights.) I think more than any matchup here, this one would change the most frequently for me if I revisit it in the future. jim c in pa ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 21:26:39 -0500 From: margaret kraft Subject: RE: [RS] Canadian artists David Francey and Sarah Harmer were the two that came to mind when I saw the subject line.Speaking of Cold Missouri Waters, did anyone read the book about the Mann Gulch Fire--"Young Men and Fire" by Norman Maclean? Margaret ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 22:04:28 +0300 From: Chris Foxwell Subject: Re: [RS] Much Madness, Round Two My picks for round two. On the whole, I'm finding these to be much easier than the picks in round one. 1. Wisteria (over Ascension) No question. Props to "Ascension", but "Wisteria" is just too lovely and wisterious. (I just created a new word. Deal with it.) 2. Balloon Man (over I Saw My Youth Today) A song I really like, versus a song I merely like. I'm sticking to my previous "reminds me of Peace Corps" justification. 3. Reunion Hill (over Fenario) RH is just sublime. "Fenario" is good, but not nearly RH's equal. Obviously it's the *Courier *version I'm thinking of, not the overwrought mess of a production on the studio version. Though I will say that RH's studio version doesn't curl my lip as much as the production on the album's other songs. 4. Mary Magdalene (over By Now) One of only two tough choices this round. I love both, and in such utterly different ways. My instinct was to give the nod to the less straightforward tune, "By Now", that being in line with my typical preferences, but MM is just too well done. It's also just too...significant? poignant?...to these ears, belonging as they do to a near-atheist who admires spirituality while loathing religions (and religion). 5. There Goes Mavis (over State of the Union) Almost tough, but not really. I love SOTU, for lots of different reasons, but "Mavis" is one of my hands-down faves. It would take something like "Wisteria" or "Fishing" or "Transit" to beat it out. 6. Cancion Sencilla (over Sparrow's Point) I've pretty much covered the reasoning in my previous ballots: "Cancion" tickles my grammar nerd / ESL-teacher / softy romantic sides, while SP is a song that I just don't find myself wanting to listen to very much, though I respect its artistry. 7. Transit (over A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress) No hesitation here. "Transit" is my favorite Shindell song, period. I have to be in a specific mood to listen to it, but having listened to it very intently for a long period of time, it has become something that is always playing somewhere inside my mind, whispering to me. (In addition to its "holy crap this is an amazing piece of layered songwriting" quality.) Plus, though it matters not at all in this selection, "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" reminds me of a particularly unhappy memory, both in terms of resonance and the timing of my exposure to the song. 8. Fishing (over Abuelita) Fishing is one of my very top favorites. Everything about it is brilliant. I agree with those who feel that the *Courier *version is superior to the studio, and to the more recent soft/slow live renditions -- although I have to say that repeated exposure to the latter led me to appreciate the song in different ways. Less emphasis on overt threat, greater emphasis on mournfulness and implied threat. Still, nothing quite beats the menacing quality of the *Courier *version. ...nothing but love for "Abuelita", by the way; it's just overmatched. 9. On a Sea of Fleur-de-lis (over Next Best Western) I really love "Fleur-de-lis", as previously described. Beautiful, haunting, evocative of medieval symbolism, and yet another song channeling Richard's feminine identity (heh). "Next Best Western" is nice, but not of the same caliber, and also not one that I frequently pull out to listen to. 10. Che Guevara T-shirt (over Money for Floods) One of the greats against one of the goods. Not much more to say; "Che Guevara" is a masterpiece. 11. Nora (over The Weather) This is a similar match-up to #9, for me, though of course "The Weather" is very different from "Next Best Western". I like each song slightly less than I do its #9 equivalent. My nod goes to the Nora, for the same reasons as in #9. 12. May (over Kenworth of My Dreams) I just don't like "Kenworth", no matter how it's performed. I'm also not a big fan of "May", but the Fast Folk version is at least enjoyable for me to listen to, much more so than the trainwreck that is the studio production. (Did I already say "overwrought"? Hmm, I think I did. Bears repeating. ;) ) I'll say as well that "May" has been running through my head off and on since the last round of voting... 13. The Courier (over The Things That I Have Seen) One of the greats against one of the mediocre-at-bests. 14. You Stay Here (over Are You Happy Now) AYHN has never been a big favorite of mine. It's cute, it's clever, and yes the beginning is much darker than many give it credit for, but ultimately it just isn't as good as "You Stay Here" (which I've gushed over enough). It is definitely a good hook for Shindell rookies, true -- but then again, so is "You Stay Here". I've had equal if not greater success with the latter than the former in attracting new Shindell fans. 15. Juggler Out in Traffic (over Waiting for the Storm) No real contest here. "Juggler" is both more tightly constructed and more powerful than "Waiting", though that's no knock against the latter. 16. Last Fare of the Day (over Arrowhead) The other real difficult choice. This one is hard. I like both very very much, but neither is at the top of my favorites. Furthermore, I like listening to "Arrowhead" a bit more, but I think that "Last Fare" is a better song. And, finally, each song has a little niggling flaw that bothers me: "Last Fare's" non-rhyme at the end, as has been mentioned here already, and the super-nasal quality of Richard's voice in the *Courier *version of "Arrowhead" (my preferred version), which becomes a bigger turn-off each time I listen to it. Argh. (Hmm, maybe I need to start listening to the other live versions I have.) I'm gonna go with "Last Fare", as the all-around better song. The Barns of Wolftrappe does make that annoucement and it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTeRqELlGlw Mike - -----Original Message----- From: Carol Love Sent: Saturday, February 16, 2013 12:32 PM To: shindell-list@smoe.org Subject: Re: [RS] Concert Mike wrote: > Carol, > > A unauthorized DVD of Shindell Youtube concerts. You've never been at a show where RS says he won't do a song he doesn't completely know the lyrics to because the goof will end up on youtube?? RG probably knows how to find it, but there's something on you tube with RS forgetting completely where he is in a request, stopping and I believe he says, "Shit!" I think it's great, but evidently Richard did NOT. Then let's not even start on Beyoncee taking an epic fall doing down stairs in giant heels. She appeals to the audience to NOT you tube it, and then it proceeds to go totally viral. Wonder if RS has the same heel issue??? :-) *Ciao!* ....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 14:08:39 -0500 From: Jeff Bernstein Subject: Re: [RS] Much Madness, Round Two > 1. Back in the day, big artists hit Miami and Atlanta, and that's as close as they ever came to me here in Tampa/St. Pete. Mr. Cassidy is on my permanent record, too. However, it's the OLDER one. Really, what other music was available to a white pre-teen suburban girl in the 70's??? FM radio had barely been invented yet!! My first "official" concert was Alice Cooper, which I think makes me edgy. I lied and told my Mom I was going to see Eddie Money. (He DID open the show...) Some great ones that come to mind that are somewhat similar to RS would David Francey, Cara Luft, Sarah Harmer, Great Big Sea, Stan Rogers, and many, many more!" Richard covered James Keelaghan's Cold Missouri Waters. There's also a strong influence of Gordon Lightfoot in RS. Ashland, ME - but I'll send this along just in case. Putting Abuelita against Wisteria in the 1st Round was like putting Syracuse against the Miami Heat. However, if Abuelita hadn't lost their starting center, and Big East Defensive Player Of The year, to academic issues right before the tournament started, they could have won the whole thing. Oh, wait. That WAS Syracuse last season. And I guess I'm still not over it. Yes, this is fun. Two of my favorite things, RS and hoops. All kidding aside, kudos to the Selection Committee for lighting a fire under the RS list's "Lazy" butt again. Paul In a message dated 2/16/2013 5:14:37 A.M. It only managed to sneak into the round at all via the kindness of the Selection Committee. Heh. This is fun.
