Chatam Township - Sanctuary Concerts Hello - Ha Ha! Tonight I get to see Richard and Lucy at a very nice church in Chatam, New Jersey. Thank you for bringing me up to date on some of the brand new songs I can now listen for. If anyone else from this list is there ... and you see a 6 foot 1 inch guy in a red Rutgers hat - a bigwhite R in the middle if the brim - that will be me probably. Please do say "hello". Concert is Sold-out .. but I am told if you get there EARLY ... and wait in line ... there's a real chanceof getting in - as some stupid people who have subscriptions to all the concerts in the series decidenot to show up at the last minute. No guarantees. Still - Richard and Lucy. Oh boy ... Oh boy... Oh boy. sanctuaryconcerts.org See ya..... Wisteria (over Ascent) - Wisteria is flawless in my ears. 2. I Saw My Youth Today (over Balloon Man) - I listened to the Reunion Hill CD several times lately, and this song is always so fragile and moving and wonderful and sad and everything. 3. Reunion Hill (over Fenario) - I love the quiet version on Live from Randolph, but I'm also a fan of the album version, so this is a clear choice. 4. By Now (over Mary Magdalene) - MM is good, make no mistake. But By Now is on a whole different level when it comes to the experience of digesting the songs. 5. State of the Union (over There Goes Mavis) - Gripping first-person narrative with Mark Knopfler vibes in the melody over boring animal song; an easy choice for me. 6. Sparrows Point (over Cancion Sencilla) - Cancion is sweet, but Sparrows Point is more intense. 7. Transit (over Summer Wind, Cotton Dress) - the hypnotic chorus of Transit trumps the lush summer love story. 8. Fishing (over Abuelita) - this round finds me voting for the depressed songs in a minor key, no exception here. 9. The Next Best Western (over On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis) - I still hear "I'm Richard and I'm tired" everytime I listen to it. 10. Money for Floods (over Che Guevara T-Shirt) - Che's music still leaves me cold, Money for Floods is good. 11. The Weather (over Nora) - tough choice, but I have to vote for at least one happy song. 12. May (over Kenworth of my Dreams) - when it comes to deciding between two songs that are this different I go with my gut feeling. 13. The Courier (over The Things That I Have Seen) - when it comes to deciding between two songs that are rather similar, I go for the one with "as the crow flies", "another 50 yards", "I'm a string pulled by a sure hand", etc. 14. You Stay Here (over Are You Happy Now) - AYHN is good, but You Stay Here is brilliant. 15. Juggler Out in Traffic (over Waiting for the Storm) - another tough choice, Juggler gets my vote because it's more enigmatic... 16. Last Fare Of The Day (over Arrowhead) - super tough choice, Last Fare of the Day is slightly more unique with its ballet dancing 3/4 beat and the wonderful live versions. I dread the next round... That said, here goes: 1. Ascent Wisteria. Wisteria takes this one for me. Beautiful and insightful at the highest RS level, I believe. I like Ascent, and am made curious by the penitent thief reference--one of those Shindell references that open doors to exploration and usually take me down the road to a wacked out interpretation. But I enjoy it. (all of you...not so much) > 2. Balloon Man > I Saw My Youth Today Balloon Man takes this one for me, not sure why. > 3. Fenario > Reunion Hill Like the John Donne props in Fenario, but Reunion Hill is my choice here > 4. By Now > Mary Magdalene Has to be Mary Magdalene. > > 5. There Goes Mavis > State of the Union There Goes Mavis is my pick here. This is one of those choices where I am stuck between artistry and social commentary--neither song being bereft of either. I resisted and disliked the "free bird" notion of Mavis, but in reading some interpretation on the list was convinced to look at this more as a tableaux--the stark colors of the bird the sky and the ocean, but its an orange bird at the beach----the familiar in an unfamiliar setting that has a sensory impact. State of the Union is too baldly stated, for me. > 6. Sparrows Point > Cancion Sencilla Sparrow's Point is too strong here. Plus, I dont speak Spanish, so even though I am sure I miss the real impact of this song, SP would beat many songs in this round for me. > 7. Transit > Summer Wind, Cotton Dress I have to go with Summer Wind, Cotton Dress here. Perennial favorite for me, but it was a close call. > 8. Fishing > Abuelita I am struck by the social commentary of each of these, but I have to go with Fishing--I may be swayed by the stripped down and more menacing version he does live. > 9. The Next Best Western > On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis I am not happy with this pairing, but have to give it to On A Sea of Fleur-de-Lis, as so rich and symbolic in an almost endless way. Another song which has led me to wacky detours, but a favorite. > 10. Money for Floods > Che Guevara T-Shirt Che Geuvara T-shirt. Just great storytelling. > 11. Nora > The Weather Nora takes this for me. I like The Weather, but I find Nora complex and intriguing in a way that is neither explained nor really obscured by the Abelard and Heloise reference. There a clerical consistency, but I am not sure what else. Leave me guessing still. > 12. May > Kenworth of my Dreams Kenworth of my Dream takes this. Once in a while you need a guilty pleasure--and this is mine. Just a fun song. > 13. The Courier > The Things That I Have Seen The Courier. Again--too strong for many other songs in this round. > 14. You Stay Here > Are You Happy Now AYHN. This was a very very close one, and I think nostalgia tipped the scales for me on this. For You Stay Here, I am struck by the plight of the family which could be any family in any war torn region, but at the same time is specifically about the Yugoslav Wars. I am also struck by the image of not letting the fire die, but no letting it burn too bright. A life or death dilemma captured so succinctly, that I am almost tempted to change my mind on this one. > 15. Waiting for the Storm > Juggler Out in Traffic Juggler Out In Traffic. Never understood why, in Waiting for the Storm, he put everything that was once inside he out out in the yard. just doesnt resonate as a symbol of anything for me, and as a practical matter, he should have had a yard sale before the storm was so close. > 16. Arrowhead > Last Fare Of The Day Arrowhead. I like LFOTD, but I never got the 9/11 connection from the song. There were some discussions on the list, but I was never convinced. The "subtle" reference was never there for me, in say, the same way You Stay Here is subtly but specifically about the Yugoslav Wars. I am dreading the sweet sixteen for the choices I am going to have to make. Can we have a lesser tournament?? NIT equivalent?? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 12:36:52 -0500 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] Manilow? It was incredibly bittersweet as I had originally planned the weekend because Davy Jones was going to play during the Star Wars weekends, so it was something to make both me and hubby happy. Davy then died. But that was 2012 for me. The year that just couldn't suck enough. I lost everything from my cat to my lifelong bestfriend. It was a living Shindell tune. ....Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #382 ************************************
