My picks: 1. May (over Bye Bye) - I like both, but May is more intense. 2. Arrowhead (over Beyond the Iron Gate) - one of the first RS songs I heard, and needless to say it made me want to hear more. 3. Juggler Out in Traffic (over Blue Divide) - I love the violin melody which he sings when he plays it solo. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams (over Grocer's Broom) - See, I don't *always* vote for the creepy, sad songs! Grocer's Broom is just too mellow for my taste music-wise. 5. The Things that I Have Seen (over Gray Green) - Never heard that one live, but the studio version is already gripping. 6. Money for Floods (over Lazy) - Not my favorite, but the line "I'd tell you his name if I thought it would help" has a certain quality. 7. The Weather (over Memory of You) - Pedro made me change my mind. 8. The Courier (over Spring) - As much as I enjoy listening to Spring, The Courier is too good to not get my vote. 9. Cancion Sencilla (over Smiling) - Very romantic! (Also, I can't specifically remember Smiling, sorry.) 10. Sparrows Point (over Gethsemani Goodbye) - We get a whole young life condensed in a four minute song - including all the bleek undertones of William Taylor's fate. Gethsemani is a wonderful song, nevertheless. 11. Castaway (over Che Guevara T-Shirt) - I never connected to Che's music... 12. Nora (over The Island) - because, well, Nora! The mystery of the relationships, the transfer to Greenland, alcohol, messages hidden in a play, IT'S ALL THERE! They often sing on each others albums, and they formed two-thirds (with Dar Williams) of a short-lived folk supergroup called Cry Cry Cry in 1998. "But live joint appearances by Kaplansky and Shindell have been rarer, particularly in the past decade. So the chance to sing together on one stage is as much as pleasure for the two artists as it is for their audiences." May Not even close, in my book. May is intense, as Norm mentioned. I am always going to prefer the FF version with the extra half-verse. Gene can attest, We're About Nine does a fine take on this live, now and again. Plus, a sentimental favorite for our old pal Lee Wessman. 2. Beyond the Iron Gate Damn, now I'm already deep into pondering mode. Love them both, and I love playing Arrowhead, but i gotta go with the layers in Iron Gate. With the disclaimer that I'm still not quite sure what it means. And I love that about it. 3. Blue Divide I don't listen to either of these all that often if I'm skimming through single tracks, but I think I like BD better. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams Again, tough choice. KOMD, in part cause I've always been a sucker for truck driving songs. Alabama singer songwriter Dave Potts does a neat cover of this. 5. The Things that I Have Seen By a slight margin. 6. Money for Floods Always liked the story here, and the experimental structure and rhyming... or lack of same. And the seemingly always timeless social commentary here. (Also one that WA9 does a fine cover of - acapella. Nice stuff.) 7. Memory of You I'm sorry, Gene, I gotta go with MOY, which was actually the second RS song I ever heard - its partly nostalgia on my part. 8. The Courier No comparison lyrically to me, plus love the flow musically. 9. Cancion SencillaSmiling I abstain from this one. If I never heard either one again, I would not feel my life was the lesser for it. 10. Sparrows Point Always loved this song and the story it tells... so sparse, and yet so full. Never noticed the math snafu before. 11. Che Guevara T-Shirt No great insight here, I just like it better. And it's a great title! 2. Nora Literate without being pretentious and highbrow. And I, too still want to know the back story. And I personally don't miss Merrit Parkway; pretty little tune but I feel cheated by a Shindell song with no lyrics. Satellites I've always been take it or leave it with. - -Jim C somewhere near Mount Nittany ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Feb 2013 16:32:06 -0500 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] New York has been buried in snow since last Saturday (Nora) Sounds like what we will be saying next week. As I mentioned in my picks, I love this song. Here are some of the things that I think about. So, Abelard the famous theologian had a secret marriage and child with Heloise. Heloise's folks were so upset that they castrated Abelard. So, that's his injury. But the song refers to HER injury. What's her injury? The song has the sense of that there has been an exchange of letters (actual letters, not e-mail) between Nora and the narrator. I actually see it as two letters, one for each verse. Drowning his vows at the bar... Wedding vows, or minister vows? Why are Nora and her husband in different locations? What's the narrator's role in it? Why did they need to have a truce? Is Nora dead? Btw, Dar has a cover of Nora on her Christian & Pagans EP. Not sure, how one will get one of those these days, but if you can, get it. It has the studio version of CP, an acoustic version (and slowed down) of Traveling Again, and Nora (recorded at Cliff Eberhart's house). And speaking of parodies, here's the song that singer/songwriter Hugh Blumenfeld wrote as a response to "Are You Happy Now." I'M SO HAPPY NOW Took back my toaster when I left You make it sound like petty theft And if you'd bother to inspect You'd know the landlord has my check I'm surprised you'd even look for spices since you never cook I see you still don't make the bed It's behind your blurry head In the photograph you sent I wondered what the hell it meant If you had any scruples you would have sent back my Nikon too. But I'm so happy now I'm so happy now I'm so happy now I smashed your pumpkin on the floor But I had reason to be pissed You'd think that when your lover leaves You might look up from the TV. I took the candy as you say But you hate children anyway, And since you sit there in the dark They won't come closer than the porch, Robert says you need some help And I agree with him myself, And though you say that he's a bum He has a job and you don't, chum. And I'm so happy now... You can keep your crummy song The one you promised for so long But now it's written, I confess It's just as bad as all the rest. And I'm so happy now... May- May wins it for me, even though I love the idea behind Bye Bye....so clever Bye Bye 2. Arrowhead-wins because it is classic RS. Beyond the Iron Gate 3. Juggler Out in Traffic-love this song! Blue Divide 4. Grocer's Broom- I think this is one of Richard's best but most overlooked songs. One of my favorites...but so is Kenworth-damn! But Grocer's Broom narrowly wins for me. Kenworth of my Dreams 5. The Things that I Have Seen- just because! Gray Green 6. Money for Floods Lazy-Such a fun and playful song! 7. Memory of You-another hauntingly beautiful song The Weather 8. The Courier-I love this one because one of the first times I saw Richard was at an outdoor dog walk/benefit concert for our local SPCA, and he substituted Terrier for Courier....it was hilarious, and I think that was the moment I fell in love with the man, the music:) Spring 9. Cancion Sencilla-a beautiful song, I love the richness of Richard's voice on it. And I don't speak a word of Spanish! Smiling 10. Gethsemani Goodbye Sparrows Point- classic 11. Castaway Che Guevara T-Shirt- grabbed me the first time I heard it, one of my favorites. And yes, I bought the t-shirt 12. The Island Nora- I love this song so much I named my dog Nora. When she was about 3 months old I took her with me to see Richard at Concerts Under the Stars, an outdoor venue. He came over to see her, I told him her name was Nora and he scooped her up and hugged her. I have a great photo of that moment. And he played Nora that night and said it was the first time he played a request from a dog! Abuelita -wow, very tough.....I LOVE Abuelita, but the first time I heard Wisteria I had just moved out of a circa 1700's farmhouse that I felt totally connected too, and yes, there was Wisteria there. I cry each and every time I hear this song. Wisteria 4. Last Fare Of The Day Get Up Clara- I think this song is just so cute....as an veterinarian, who did a stint on farm animals for a few years, I can relate. Also, it must be the only song ever written that uses the word "Visigoths!" 5. Ascent TV Light-Just a good old fashioned love song.... 6. Balloon Man-an extremely visual song, just so well written (yeah, I know, all RS songs are well written!) Easy Street 7. Confession Fenario-I love Richard's voice on Fenario 8. Howling At The Trouble By Now-creepy but wins this bracket 9. I Saw My Youth Today You Again-this song has so many levels.....yeah, I know, all RS songs have so many levels :) 10. Parasol Ants There Goes Mavis-I love the back story.....and throw in an animal and I'm hooked 11.One Man's Arkansas State of the Union-I had to listen to this song about 20 times the first time I listened to really take it all in. 12. On A Sea Of Fleur-De-Lis-while Hazel is the grandmom I wish I had, Fleur-De-Lis just haunts me.... Hazel's House 13. Mary Magdalene-Beats out the animal song....this is in my top 5 RS songs, so I have to go with it. So Says The Whipporwill This is FUN!
