Very little inter action of talking about the songs, as he spent must of his time tuning, which I know artist do, but they do it with some inter action. I mention Tim Flannery, as he plays once a year in January, since he is a professional Baseball person and I heard his show on Concert window on 1-24 as he had many new songs, and he talked about them, as he tuned. Chuck Brodsky had many new songs as the after act. The show was enjoyable. I got a video I shot of The Kennedys with their new song and they got right into it. The funny thing is that the best known songs (Are You Happy Now and Kenworth) are quite different from most of the other tracks - and, again in my opinion, not the strongest of the album. The highlights are Nora, You Again, Courier, and the title track. Fortunately, most of those are on the live albums. One possible reason for the sophomore slump is that the artist has had more time to prepare the album, and has a wide body of songs to pick from. Then, when the first one is a hit, there's more pressure to get a second one done. I think of Suzanne Vega's amazing self-titled debut - - some of the songs were several years old. She took what she thought were the best, and then had slimmer pickings for Solitude Standing. SS was peppier, and much more of a commercial success, but I think SV was the better album. Mariana's Table You Stay Here You Stay Here. Love the building tension, and the progression of what he's seeking, from wood to god. 3. Abuelita Wisteria Both nice. Hard decision. Changed my mind. Going with Wisteria, because of the imagery and feeling of nostalgia it evokes. 7. Confession Fenario Confession. I'm not sure why. 10. Parasol Ants There Goes Mavis There Goes Mavis, but I don't know if I can listen to it again. I last saw Richard perform 3 years ago, when I was pregnant. His voice and melodies often give me chills, but when he sang this song, the combination of voice, melody, storyline, and pregnancy hormones had me practically bawling. For days. Waiting For The Storm - the almost bluegrassy feel. Wish I could pick like it. 3. Wisteria - nostalgia 4. Last Fare Of The Day - tough to have this against Clara but I came up with more reasons for this one. The sentiment and the way he does this one live - seems emotion-filled. 5. Ascent - because you can interpret it a number of ways 6. Balloon Man - again, it's the visual images and the favourable treatment of a character 7. Fenario - it's the rhythm. 8. By Now - It's a dark, dark song chock full of imagery and I'm not entirely sure that I know exactly what it's getting at, which makes me listen to it carefully and wonder at different situations 9. You Again - the bass rundown 10. Parasol Ants - I do love Mavis but the whimsy of Parasol Ants plus the musicality and rhythm of the tune do it for me. 11. State of the Union - the sleeve notes for this and the fact that he played pretty much everything in the EP demo version 12. On A Sea Of Fleur-De-Lis - It's cruel to put these together as both are real favourites of mine but because Sea of Fleur-De-Lis is the first RS song I managed to work out myself, it wins. I'm currently working on Hazel's house with the help of Ron's capture of it and my guitar teacher. 13. Mary Magdalene - the song that introduced me to Richard (so it wins) through a singer called John Wright - he used to do this and Fishing but I never really knew they were by RS until I saw him at Shrewsbury Folk Festival three years ago and he sang this. Also the song I learned how to strum my guitar with - I never learned before as I was taught to be a pattern/fingerpicker. I love So Says The Whippoorwill too for Dylan-esque delivery, the lovely verses, the melody and imagery again plus circle of life. I see the Whipporwill, the climber etc when listening to this. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2013 14:13:39 -0500 From: Laurence Krulik Subject: Re: [RS] Richard radio interview on WUMB, this Thursday 2/7, 2pm Playing songs from the upcoming record... Not having those Shindell albums is like being a Beatles fan and not having "Sgt. Pepper's" and "The White Album". Hey all . . . voting's real close, so if you haven't picked your favorite songs in each of these pairings, get outta your footie pajamas and get your vote on!! 1. You Stay Here 2. Waiting For The Storm 3. Wisteria (although - I hate you for making me choose here!) 4. Last Fare Of The Day 5. Ascent 6. Balloon Man Frankly, neither of the choices here do a whole lot for me. 7. Confession Dated now, but a helluva lotta fun in its time. 8. By Now Sorry, I know this creeps some folks out, but a favorite from my early listening days.) 9. You Again I have to admit, I'm thinking of the Fast Folk take on this. 10. There Goes Mavis Again, neither choice does a lot for me personally... but my wife likes this one more, so I'm fine with that. 11. State of the Union Love the story, and love the way it wraps up. 12. On A Sea Of Fleur-De-Lis The guitar accompaniment clinches the deal for me here 13. So Says The Whipporwill I DO think the recorded version lot a lot from the early live "in studio" solo takes on this song. But still... the Dave Carter thing just pushes this one to the front for me. - -Jim C - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2013 21:04:10 -0800 From: Subject: [RS] And the winners are...
