Richard sounded fantastic tonight at Club Passim and I am absolutely LOVING the new songs. It was great to hear "Satellites" live again, and same goes for "Stray Cow Blues". "Deer on the Parkway" is incredibly lovely. "Careless" is brand new, sung from the point of a view of a man apologizing to his (ex-?) lover for his past abusive behavior. Sad and beautiful. Actually, sad and beautiful was sort of a theme. "All Wide Open" is also brand new, I'm not sure I caught the complete story but I believe it is about a woman struggling with drug abuse who returns to her father's home, and their encounter grappling with this problem. I didn't write down a full set-list but maybe someone else put one together? The new album is going to be killer. I cannot wait. In the meantime, looking forward to Richard's two Passim shows tomorrow night!! It was so much fun watching the live feed. I loved chatting with other listers and Concert Window's feed is the next best thing to being at the show yourself. It really feels like you are part of the live audience. - --V ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2013 14:26:16 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Gesthemani I was only able to stomach about a minute of that horrible cover! I thought Mark was out of it, for half of the show like Pete, said, not finding his way, in backing Richard up. I have heard shows where Richard had a piano player and others backing up him up and they did much better then Mark. Mark did come through in the end, as he did a nice job with Transit. Especially the sound effects for tightening up the bolts on the van. The reference to the Sawmill, is due to a road called Sawmill Parkway, for the song about the deer. The song about the guitar was really good, as Tim Flannery has a neat song about his guitar, Your Six Strings, where he was a minor league manager for the San Diego Padres and his team just lost 10 games in a row and he does carry his guitar with him all the time. So instead of getting me, he wrote this song as you would thing it is a love song about a woman, not his guitar, great song. But overall, a good show. I had no problem with the lighting, as this is my third show at Club Passim, as most likely being there live is better. Lighting at places I go to is like this, Jammin Java, The Birchmere. This had the most attendance via the net, 44 or so, as the other shows where about 20 that I have seen. I wonder if concert window meet the cost of doing these shows, as they get a third of the revenue, the club a third and the performer a third You would think with all the fans of Shindell, Kaplansky, Buskin and Battea, Tim Flannery and Chuck Brodsky, the other shows I have seen, the fan base would be more supportive and willing to watch a show for five bucks. I hope Concert Window attendance for all shows among the fans of the performers will grow, or they might not be around. Looking forward to tomorrow. Concert Window has many other venues they show concerts. Sadly, Club Passim has no control with the weather Pete, as I understand completely your frustration with the concert change to 10 pm Thursday, from Friday, but they are getting 1 to 2 feet of snow, not a good thing, for people to be out. Our good friends at smoe.org, who have hosted this list (and dozens of others) for many years, have examined and updated the configuration file in the technical part of the site known as the Steam Pipe Trunk Distribution Venue. Seems the list was inadvertently set to send out a Digest after the accumulated message volume was only a quarter of what it's supposed to be. Now -- in the interest of full disclosure -- the Much Madness song tournament is still going to generate more messages than the list typically gets. So for anyone who still feels that the Richard Shindell Discussion List is no place to be having lengthy discussions about the music of Richard Shindell, well, you're still free to leave the list and come back when the tournament is over and we're back to having no messages for months at a time. If that's your idea of a good list. Anyway, our great national nightmare is over. One more day to submit votes for the first half of round one (the closest pairing is three votes apart), and I'll post the next round of pairings on Friday morning. Also, still haven't heard from the Concert Window people about Friday's cancellation. But, overall, fun to catch the new songs -- especially "All Wide Open". You Stay Here 2. Waiting for the Storm South Florida - need I say more? I remember the summer we had 4 storms in a row (Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, within weeks of each other) - I was bone-weary of pre- and post-hurricane work. We got lucky and weren't seriously affected by any of them - however, by the fourth storm, I refused to take down any of the 50+ windchimes on my back patio, hoping they would survive but not willing to put out any more energy to ensure their safety... 3. Wisteria 4. Last Fare of the Day Especially remembering where I was the first time I heard this song: in Ron G.'s car, with other folkie friends, a few days after the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, on our way into New York City to listen to a live CD release concert on a loading dock at noon on a weekday - what a perfect setting for the subtle 9/11 backdrop, if you're paying attention... 5. TV Light 6. Balloon Man 7. Confession 8. Howling at the Trouble 9. You Again 10. There Goes Mavis 11. State of the Union 12. Hazel's House Reminds me of going to my grandmother's house in Athens, Georgia when I was a young girl - I recall her flaky biscuits, the dishtowel draped over the iced tea pitcher (to keep out insects), the weeping willow tree in the side yard that we would climb after Sunday dinner... 13. Mary Magdalen I think Carol said this one should have been given a bye in the first round, and I heartily agree - I adore Whippoorwill (mainly because of the Dave Carter nod), but MM is a classic...
