Did someone mention a golem in an earlier post? My votes and random comments: 1. You Stay Here. This song grabbed me the first time I heard it, My initial thought was of a post-apocalyptic survivor family, and I'm sticking to it. 2. Waiting for the Storm. The utter surrender of "everything that was inside I've put out in the yard"! 3. Wisteria. I first heard Wisteria (and You Stay Here) standing on the plaza at Lincoln Center on a drizzly Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1999. Cry, Cry, Cry were the headliners for the evening concert at Damrosch Park bandshell, but this was more of song circle w/ Lucy, Dar and Richard taking turns and providing backup vocals. But Wisteria: the counterpoint of vocal melody to guitar refrain and the imagery were instantly identifiable somehow as part of my life experience. The songs I heard that day continue to have a special place for me in Richard's repertoire. 4. Last Fare of the Day. Helped me put 9/11 into perspective with its non-referential, personal touch. "i brought them home in that cruel cruel rain." "he says 'Hope" and she says 'Grace'." 5. Ascent. No explainable reason. 6. Balloon Man. And about the last verse -- in many ways, it's what we're willing to give up that makes us who we are. 7. Fenario. Surprised me. After several re-listenings, I remembered Confession started wearing thin halfway thru Bush II. I like Fenario's dark devotion and its "GoT" feel. Also the reference to Jesse Colin Young's "Darkness, Darkness" 8. Toss a coin. 9. You again. And again. 10. There Goes Mavis. Richard works his sleight-of-hand with great skill, first lulling us into a relaxed state, then letting us believe the castle building is the most important thing going on here, distracting us from the magic of little girls. 11. State of the Union, by a split decision. 12. On a Sea of Fleur-de-Lis 13. Mary Magdalene, hands down. thanks again, Ron. Can't wait 'til the next round.
