I like the "Song of the Week" idea very much. But every time somebody refers to SOTW, I have a bit of a double-take; my first association to that idea is the Canadian band Spirit of the West. (Not much like Richard's stuff at all, but if you would enjoy some very political folk with heavy Irish influence, their early albums _Tripping Up the Stairs_ and _Labour Day_ are on my "very highly recommended" list. After that, they went in a much more rock direction, which isn't to my personal taste; your mileage, of course, may vary.) Vanessa and all-- If you're on Concert Window and see my username (ookpik) in the "chat" box, please say hi! I'm working as technical support for CW a couple of nights a week, and I'm often on during other shows that I can't reach or can't afford to attend in person. It always makes me happy to see fellow listmembers show up. (If you sign up for a paid membership, I'd appreciate your telling them I sent you. I don't get any bonuses for it, but it's good to let management know I'm recommending the service--and I asked to work there because I'd belonged for a while and am so enthusiastic about it.) That would be perfect. Lucy sells at shows only Kaplansky and Kaplansky, her and her Dad performing and telling stories on a CD. It could have been Kaplansky Squared, but it was too late to change the title. OK, Ibve taken all 58 original songs from Richardbs studio CDs to compete in the Richard Shindell song-a-thon, a.k.a. bMuch Madness.b Six classics, bAre You Happy Now,b bFishing,b bSummer Wind, Cotton Dress,b bNext Best Western,b bReunion Hillb and bTransitb have been chosen by your friendly list-manager to get first-round byes. The remaining 52 songs have been randomly broken into two rounds of 13 head-to-head matches. The pairings themselves are also totally random. After 26 first-round winners have been declared, the six classics will be added back in for the round of 32, then a Sweet Sixteen, an Elite Eight, a Final Four, and a championship. This is the first round. Your job is to choose your favorite song from each pairing. Just indicate the winning song with its pair number. What makes them qualify as your favorite is completely up to you, and youbre not really limited to just choosing a song based on its studio CD version (that is, you may choose bState of the Unionb based on its bMarianabs EPb version instead of its bNot Far Nowb version). But it would be nice for a little insight into why youbre making the choices youbre making since this is, after all, supposed to be a discussion generating exercise. Webll keep the first round live through, say, next Thursday (or until we stop getting responses) then Ibll post the pairings for the other first round bracket. There are two rules. The first rule is: don't forget to not include the entire email string at the bottom of your response. The second rule is: don't talk about Fight Club. ;-) Have fun, and let the Madness begin. 1. You Stay Here ~ This is the most meaningful song to me in an era after 9-11, Katrina, Sandy & the Tsunami in Japan. 2. A Tune For Nowhere ~ I'll almost always default for the older tune. However, I've heard RS do this live, where he explains the story of the Bosnian girl who inspired this song. And I love my country, but there are days I think we all may be singing a tune for Nowhere. (Bonus: I'm an English teacher and Richard REALLY pronounces the "n" in "government", which has stopped me from misspelling it!!! :-) 3. Wisteria ~ this one was SO HARD. I would like to nominate "Abuelita" as the wild card pick!!! Has to be "Wisteria" because RS captures so much of what I've felt in nostalgia for old places and the people we used to be. 4. Last Fare Of The Day ~ by a NY mile. (Pun intended) While never saying what the event is, it perfectly captures both the hope and despair after 9-11. One of my favorite 21st Century Shindell tunes. 5. TV Light ~ I like RS when he gets his country on. I've also had this night. 6. Balloon Man ~ ANOTHER Sophie's Choice!!! And it's only Balloon man IF it's is the alternate version included on the CD. 7. Confession ~ actually not one of my absolute favs, but I like the concept of my CVS guy as my dealer. 8. By Now ~ Only song I've heard with Gorka in the mix. Should play out a good serial killer movie. 9. You Again ~ Damn you Gritz!!! This was another really difficult choice. I want "I Saw My Youth" as a wildcard, too. You Again has fit more than one situation in my life. Ironically, none of them romantic love. Most recently it has made me think of my oldest and dearest friend who was taken way before it was time. I do feel her at times. I don't know if she's "half a world away", but she is still in my life. 10. There Goes Mavis ~ coin toss. Don't really LOVE either song. Sorry. 11. State of the Union ~ maybe just because I have heard it played more times. 12. On A Sea Of Fleur-De-Lis ~ whimsical, weird and RS will never explain what it means. The vocals on this are some of his best. 13. Mary Magdalene ~ SHOULD have played out "The DaVinci Code". Way before Dan Brown started writing the biggest books with the shortest chapters, RS told me that MM might have been Jesus's bride. The song is beautiful and reminds us that Jesus was sent here to be a man as well as a savior. Love it when Dar covers the song, too. *Ciao!* ......Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #264 ************************************
