The song tournament sounds like a fun way to spark more discussion here about Richard's music, and I agree--why tailor the list to people who *don't* want mail? - --V On Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 7:49 PM, wrote: > If I didn't think it would piss off many of the less-interested list > members, > something I thought might be fun and engaging would be something we did > back on > the old AOL Jackson Browne list . . . a song tournament. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2013 04:52:48 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Streaming: Darryl Purpose, speaking of the good old days I heard Tracy sing Girl From Golden last time we saw her and she did a beautiful job. I love Darryl's new album, I love his version too. I'm hoping to see him sometime in concert, the few times I've seen him, he always put on a great show and mentioned Dave. I'm sure he misses Dave too. I always heard Mary Magdalen as a song about loss, her loss of a friend and confidante, not a lover. To me, the song makes Jesus more real, more human. But re-reading the lyrics, I can see how you can think she was speaking about her (maybe unrequited?) lover. The thought of people walking out because of that song reminds me of seeing Joan Baez when Dave, Tracy and Richard were touring with her. She made some comments, I don't remember what but some people in the audience were not happy about it and were pretty vocal about it. She told them to shut up, it was her concert and they knew it when they bought their ticket! I just went on Richard's site and he said he wouldn't have his new cd with him on this upcoming tour. I wasn't expecting it but hey maybe it won't be too much longer until he releases it! Here's hoping. And welcome to Michael Bird and any and all newbies to the list. I hope we can keep this going! For those of you not on Richard's newsletter mailing list, here's the meat of it, and tour dates are up on his website: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ In February and March I'll be back in the US for a series of shows in the East (MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, VA, NC, TN, GA, and FL). We'll be playing a fair amount of new material (in addition to a selection of the tried and true). The band configurations for these gigs (especially in the North East) will vary somewhat, though always drawing from the same herd of cats: Lincoln Schliefer (bass), Marc Shulman (electric guitar), Joe Bonadio (percussion), and Clifford Carter (piano). If you'd like to know who I'll be bringing along on any particular night, please check click on the "more info" link for that show. Now the hard partb&. The new record will not be available at these shows. Judging by the tone of recent emails, which range from hopeful, gently admonishing, and even downright homicidal (in a good way!), I know that some of you are growing slightly restless. I take this as a sign of affection, which I'll try to reciprocate by making a good record. FYI, during this upcoming tour, we will be experimenting with a few of the songs that have never been performed live, hoping that they gain some definition in performance. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2013 10:46:35 -0500 From: Bart Gallagher Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V12 #255 Hi All, Darryl Purpose will be at the University Cafe at Stony Brook, NY on Sunday, April 7, 2:00 PM. He also loves Monty Python, The Holy Grail, Spam-O-Lot, the musical of the Holy Grail, and Life of Brian. Good to see some people of the cloth, to have a open mind, on these things. The song is a great story. And I cut all the other emails off, like Ron asked. O:)!
