I liked going to a show where you heard a few new songs for the first time, before they were recorded. Not to jinx it, but when that happened we waited forever for the album. I KNOW what you mean, and that's what worries me. I feel that most artist have a finite amount of symphonies, master paintings, prose, poetry, etc. in their soul and if they live long enough, the soul can run dry. (I guess great actors are exempted from this, but they do not create they interpret.) In the 90's and early aughts, seems to me to be Shindell's most fertile period. However, he began his career in his 30's and could have been building up material during those 30+ years. He certainly was building up life experience. He still puts out songs that amaze me. (I have a Bachelor's in English Lit and a Masters in Reading, and the word "equipoise" was new to me!!) I haven't been swept off my feet by an entire album in quite a long time. Again he's put out some of my favorite songs in the Argentina years ("Last Fare", "I Am", "Balloon Man") but there hasn't been a *Sparrow's Point* or *Somewhere Near Paterson* in there. So I DO appreciate the process - and that's what worries me... ....Carol On Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 9:11 AM, Pete Jameson wrote: > I can't be the only one on the Shin-Dig who recognises the inherent > difficulty in crafting a good song...Maybe Richard's set the bar so high > that he requires more time than the average songsmith...but some of the > comments reflect a lack of appreciation for what it takes to write a good > song...Give the guy a break...Show a little patience...I see this all the > time these days -- people seem to think that they're entitled to more -- as > if we don't have enough to keep us happy musically...think back 30 years, > we had LPs, cassettes, 8 tracks, maybe a reel to reel, but we weren't > remotely aware of our favourite songsters plans, unless you read Sing Out!, > Rolling Stone, etc. and an artist like Richard would've received scant > coverage then, as now... > > Breathe...take a walk...leave your iPod behind...it'll be here before you > know it... > > He'll give us what we need, when we need it -- or, one of you will pen a > song and post it for all of us to critique... > > Wistful & Peevish, > > Pedro in PA > > "Let the mystery be..." -- Iris Dement ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2012 14:29:06 +0000 (UTC) From: Ramcey Subject: [RS] Richard's Facebook Post Project update.... The new record (still untitled) is shaping up nicely. My pal Greg Anderson and I have been ensconced in Scott Petito's amazing studio near Woodstock, NY for the past two weeks. Every day is another revelation, when one great musician after another comes in and proceeds to play the most glorious stuff. Yesterday, Lucy Kaplansky swooped in for some harmony. So much fun. Today we had David Spinozza , Joe Bonadio, and Clifford Carter. Also this week: Bill Holloman, Dan Hickey. Previous sessions: Marc Shulman , Sara Milonovich, Larry Campbell, Ben Wittman. I'm so lucky to be able to work with such talented people. Having a blast. Ramcey in Nashville - ------------ Richard SHINDELL??? It's called Reunion. http://www.amazon.com/Reunion-Lucy-Kaplansky/dp/B008OHV5N2/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_1 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2012 09:48:53 -0500 From: Jean Rossner Subject: [RS] Concerts (not RS directly) For those of you who were unaware of it: There's a new service, Concert Window, which is Webcasting many of the shows at Club Passim, the Freight & Salvage, and a few other venues. (Mostly coice of pay-per-view--usually $3, I think--or unlimited views for a flat fee per month; some shows, e.g. at schools and smaller venues, are free.) Sound quality is good, except when the Net connection is having problems. Live only; you can't replay a previously-aired show, alas. And of course I encourage people to get out to the venues whenever possible, in order to fully support the venues and the artists as well as give themselves the full experience. But I'm only partly employed and can't afford to get to Passim as often as I'd like--and I moved out of Berkeley (CA) thirteen years ago, so going to the Freight regularly is not an option. So this is an incredible bargain. Lucy Kaplansky's show on the 30th is on the list of those to be broadcast. http://www.concertwindow.com (Full disclosure: I recently started working part-time for Concert Window, so I have some interest in their making a success of it. But please note that my delight in the webcasts antedates working there; in fact, I emailed and asked about work possibilities, because I've been so happy with the service since it started.)
