It moves from death and defeat and cruel rain to birth and hope and sweet rain. I feel like the average Shindell ballad ends "....three days west of Normandy with a rifle in my hand." Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the dark night of the soul. However, I think it is fitting when talking about 9-11, especially in retrospect, to mention hope and carrying on. I actually did like Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)." when it came out immediately following the attacks, but it was a song for the moment not one to be a "keeper". "Last Fare" can have me reflect back but not feel gut punched. Not to mention the poetic genius of comparing an experienced cabby weaving through traffic to ballet dancing. Also it speaks to what one CAN do after tragedy. The driver can't do anything about the twin towers, but he can keep taking New Yorkers to where they need to go. I think it's one of Shindell's most brilliant songs ever. ~ Carol, originally from Clearwater ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2012 18:32:59 -0400 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] Digest Tangle PLEASE edit down the content of the post > you're replying to, particularly if your email system automatically keeps > the > post at the bottom of your reply. It actually blows up, and then they complain about that. Oy Vey!! (It also serves as a depressing reminder of the median age of your average Shindell fan. THIS girl was NOT jiggy with turning 50 in August.) ~ Carol ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2012 15:20:34 -0400 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] What reeled me in.... What a great job he does with that song...especially with Dar and Lucy doing background. My first RS cd was Courier which I still love. Of course I have all his recordings at this point.<< I saw Richard open for Dar fifteen (!!) years ago this month. Two songs hooked me: Fishing and Mary Magdalen (which Dar did). And as far as my comment about "Last Fare of the Day" not being an epic recording on "Vuelta," I dunno, there's just something about it that's not as grand as its story line. Never really liked the drums on it . . . I went with the GA floor "seats" which is really almost never done by this 5' 2" girl. I can live with my fellow concert goers who are not "vertically challenged". What I couldn't stand was the endless sea of raised cell phones taping every moment. Besides being obnoxious, I wonder how the cell phone cinematographer really is able to enjoy the show. BTW, any teachers here on the list ~ don't ever do ANYTHING in your classroom for more than 5 seconds ~ unless you want it on youtube. My students were complaining that my test taking strategies lesson was boring. After reminding them that all adults have to deal with "boring" eventually, I periodically tap danced before announcing other techniques or skills. And I was sure I didn't give anyone cell phone lead time.
