It is a song that really captures the sorrow of 9-11, but without any patriotic jingoism. Not an easy thing to do. On Sparrow's Point, I'd probably co-nominate "Courier". Maybe it's just because I'm an English teacher, but those are some of the best lyrics RS has ever woven together. ~ Carol ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2012 18:45:26 -0400 From: "Michael & Linda Marmer" Subject: Re: [RS] RS sampler. Ron, I understand what you write about some of Richard's songs, but for a new person to be introduce to his music to him or her, I think those are good songs to have to get them to grow on Richard's music. Are You Happy Now got me hooked on his music, from Lavin's CD When October Goes, I got 3 Shindell CDs without knowing anything more about him. Good call. I was just in Maine, as Carol writes something about cellphones. Richard has a song about Mary M. I saw this sign on a church sign in Maine. If You Love Jesus honk, if you want to meet him, text while driving. Maybe Richard can do something with that in a song. My mix for the newb is a bunch of your can't live withouts and with sprinklings of the "I'm over it" grouping. For one thing, without the "over" tunes, there are almost NO up tempo songs. So, for someone new to RS, it's kinda a "Suicide is Painless" collection. I also think you should add "Transit" to your "must have's". I would be ecstatic to have him perform more of your list at shows, but we have nothing but youtube to blame. RS is an anal perfectionist and he isn't going to risk flubbing an older tune and have it on Internet blast. I actually just listened to a Fresh Air with Louis CK, and he was talking about how comics in the current generation can't go into small venues with "test" material because it ends up on youtube. Sure, we also get Beyonce' taking an epic tumble in high heels at one of her shows, but is even THAT right??? I was shocked a couple of years ago when my husband shouted out "Branching Out" to Gorka at a house show AND HE DID IT. Moral of the story: folks if you want the more obscure stuff ~ put down your cell phones. ~ Carol ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2012 20:20:28 -0400 (EDT) From: rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] RS sampler. BTW, the reason "Are You Happy Now" is not in my "get people to like Richard list" is that it is probably more ATYPICAL of the rest of his music than almost any other song. Like many other folks, I first heard Richard via that song on the "When October Goes" compilation. Assumed he was an irreverent singer-songwriter in the Loudon Wainwright III mode. Imagine my dismay when I bought "Sparrows Point" and found it full of mining-disaster-esque songs. Now, don't get me wrong, I MUCH prefer those songs, but someone who wants more stuff like AYHN is going to be disappointed. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2012 18:48:51 -0400 From: "Michael & Linda Marmer" Subject: Re: [RS] A Shindell Primer If I had room on my CD, that would be on it Last Fare Of The Day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OdIp8DMR1E This is a great song by Sean McCann of Great Big Sea fame. A song about his Grandparents. I think Richard could do a version of this someday. I'd include both of those songs, Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, Che Guvera T shirt, and State in the Union in the post-Courier (the album) must have list. Interesting that these sings are all political. I still think Courier is the best place to start. >> On Sparrow's Point, I'd probably co-nominate "Courier".
