I think I will start ith Tom before I tackle any covers. I do prefer his Jersey Girl version. Once I as playing Tom's Downtown Train version at work and my co-worker asked who the ell is that! She only knew Rod Stewart's version. But by the end of the song, he fell in love with Tom's version. like the last verse of Beyond the Iron Gate. To me, without the last verse, t's about death. With the last verse, it's about a near-death experience. I ould rather experience the latter than the former! Not sure if we discussed his on the list previously. And I can't seem to figure out how to access the rchives. anet ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2011 23:07:31 -0500 (EST) From: rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] 13 Songs >> And I can't seem to figure out how to access the archives. << Now you can. ttp://www.smoe.org/lists/shindell-list/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2011 09:14:42 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] 13 Songs I can't get over the 'live' feel of the album. I keep expecting applause at the end of the songs. To me, the stand out song is Fishing. This version, to me, gave it a new spin, haunting, it really made me listen to the words. I've long stopped really listening to it long ago but this version makes you stand up and really listen. I like the slower version of Beyond the Iron Gate but he leaves off a verse, I wonder why. Thanks to all who gave me suggestions regarding Tom Waits. Janet - --- On Mon, 12/19/11, Christine Thomas wrote: > Hi - how is everyone liking the new > album. In my review of the album, which I posted a few days ago, I didn't even mention this, because I didn't realize until I relistened to the original that there was another verse, so seldom did I actually listen to the original. With or without the verse, I still don't really understand the song. Maybe there was a long discussion on this list years ago about it. I compiled a number of past setlist and transfered them to http://www.setlist.fm/stats/richard-shindell-73d62639.html There you can get an overview of the most played songs, the when (by year or - where I could find some sort of "tour" in the tour calendar - by tour) and where (including a map view by country and when you click on the US by state). The setlist archive as well as some of the setlist included there are incomplete. I also failed to note whether a particular show was a solo or a band show (or something in between) - but you can find a link the corresponding list post wherever the setlist was taken from one of your reports. By now it should be clear that I like statistics - and if anyone has some additional setlists, feel free to add them to the collection, or to just post them here! Judging from the huge number of setlists I found here, at least some of you are equally inclined to making/keeping/sharing lists. I should go back and try to see how many of those shows were among the 62 total RS shows I've seen. What was fascinating to see was that eight of the top ten "play count" songs on the master chart are on the new CD. Which validates my thought that the CD more appropriately should have been called "13 songs, one of which you've never heard and a bunch of others you've heard a whole lot." Looking forward to Volume 2, which I really hope leans more to the "stuff we haven't heard" side. That having been said, any excuse for recorded RS music is a reason to rejoice, and I am enjoying the CD.
