(but only 1 new song) [rongrittz@aol.com] Re: [RS] new cd!! (but only 1 new song) [Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] Why Carol Loves Richard I listened to some of the samples at Fish. One of them was "You Stay Here", which he also performed on the webcast from The Passim. I've been a fan of Shindell for almost 20 years. (Hard to believe it's been that long, isn't it??!!) You Stay Here has never been on my personal greatest hits, but something about hearing it acoustically again in the webcast made me really take the lyrics in differently. I don't know if it's the changes in me (I've actually taught students who have escaped Bosnia, Croatia, Cuba, etc), or the changes in the times in which we live, but the escalation of the crisis as revealed in each verse by what he much search for REALLY hit me on the recent listen. I was really struck by the genius of his storytelling. If you casually listen to that song, you don't really catch the progression of desperation. I'm so glad that's on his new acoustic album, just because I've suddenly psychically "synced" with the lyrics. If you look at a song like "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" or "Born in the USA" which I like both by Seeger and Springsteen and covered by Richard -- they tell stories, too. However it's very first person and direct. To me the genius and uniqueness of RS's songs is that he picks the bystander or the offbeat person and tells the story from their angle. The twin towers and September 11 are never mentioned in The Last Fare of the Day, but it still works as both a tribute and remembrance of all that happened. And the fact that you can suddenly find a new connection to a song you've heard before is pretty amazing. And that is why I wrote my book report on Richard Shindell. :-) .....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Nov 2011 12:55:04 -0400 (EDT) From: rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] new cd!! (but only 1 new song) I'll buy it, of course, and the samples sound great, but I'm with Janet on the selection of songs. Six of the thirteen (Transit, Fishing, Mary Magdeline, AYHN, Reunion Hill and Next Best Western) were already included on the live record, and are regular concert staples.. I really wish there'd been more songs that we REALLY never hear him play anymore, or perhaps a couple more covers. But still, it's Richard, so it's great news. I wonder what ade him pick these particular songs. I wish On a Sea of Fleur de Lis, Blue ivide or even May would've been 'reworked' instead of these regulars. I've heard his reworking of Beyond The Iron Gate from a concert recording, and it's wonderful.
