That song has come to mean so much to me. (I hate to blaspheme, it's probably more personal for me than any RS song.) Late last winter my 29 year old nephew committed suicide. He was a great kid who loved fishing, women and beer -- probably in that order. Two years ago he hurt his back after falling while working on a roofing job. He was prescribed obscene amounts of Oxycodone and became addicted. Florida is NOTORIOUS nationwide for it's "pill mills" -- so the supply never ran out. So a regular kid from a good home got hooked on synthetic heroine. (I'm not fishing for sympathy. Matt's Mom, my beautiful sister in law, Charlotte, has asked that we share Matt's story when we can. So I honor her wishes.) So, for me, he certainly is "*the angel that fell.*..." John Gorka's "Blue Chalk" hits me, too but is not quite the gut punch McKenna puts out. But back to the song. I wonder WHY I didn't hear Richard. Any other time he gets behind a folk lady singing, I immediately hear his vocals. Is it the way his vocals play almost behind Lori's instead of being harmonies??? How did I miss this?? I must know!! I'm also wondering could this be a great RS cover?? Or is it a song that was done too well the first time to touch??? .....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2010 08:19:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Never Die Young Thank you for sharing Carol, it's so sad but it's becoming too common nowadays. Here on Long Island there has been a resurgence of heroin addiction. I remember as a kid in the Bronx seeing alot of 'hippies' aka heroin addicts walking around in a stupor or being violent. It's probably what kept me on the straight and narrow! I saw Lori sing that song with Richard backing her up when she opened for him years ago. She had mentioned she wrote it about her mother whom she lost as a young child. I'm not sure why you didn't notice Richard's vocals, to me it's very prominent but maybe you were concentrating on the words, the message. I had a powerful reaction to Richard's background vocals on Dar's 'If I Wrote You'. At the time, I was still new to his music and had no idea they were in a group together. I had just discovered them right after they did their last concert. Typical of my timing! I had only heard one or two of Richard's songs, listened to Dar's cd but immediately recognized Richard on the background and made me want to hear more of his music. I know he's sung background on others but for the life of me can't think of anyone else, except for Antje of course. And as for duets, I would've really LOVED to hear Richard with Dave Carter. I had the opportunity to see them together when they were touring with Joan Baez but I think just the both of them together would've really been something wonderful. Instant addiction ensued, since the first song in his set was "You Stay Here". I wept openly at all three. Music does that to me. I could hardly breathe. What's your current favorite? Off the current album, I like 'Get up Clara', which I imagine is sung perhaps by Longinus, the man who pierced Jesus' side with his spear, doomed to wander the earth alone until Judgement Day. I kind of like the sad whimsy of it. "Clara dear/ A soul's a heavy load/ when you're running out of road/ and you can never go back to Rome" strikes me as quite sad, even though the music is kind of perky. And because these are true prescription drugs, unscrupulous doctors open "pain clinics" and prescribe these drugs by the barrel full. I asked my local pharmacist about it and he said he got unbelievably large scripts for these drugs. Every time he checks to see if the script is correct, the doctors say yes. Finally, law enforcement has begun to crack down. >>>I saw Lori sing that song with Richard backing her up when she opened for him years ago.<<< ....That must have been AWESOME. Excluding seeing Cry, Cry, Cry live, the closest I've come to that is seeing Lucy K do backing vocals for John Gorka. She opened a show for him in Tampa back in the 90's. VERY cool. I've never seen Richard with anyone else on the ticket. I blew off his Joan Baez show. I probably should have gone!!! >>>I know he's sung background on others but for the life of me can't think of anyone else, except for Antje of course.<<< ....One of my FAVORITES is RS harmonizing with Lucy Kaplansky on *Guinevere*. You have to wait for the second chorus. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=Guinevere+Lucy+Kaplansky&x=0&y=0 ....CL ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2010 16:06:37 -0400 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V11 #64 On Sun, Sep 12, 2010 at 1:57 PM, E. (The tickets had long ago been purchased and we thought getting out was the best thing we could do.) Gorka did "*Blue Chalk*" (Maura O'Connell has done a beautiful cover of this as well...) in that set which is about loving an addicted person you can't help. I DID cry at "...love's not enough to keep you off that stuff, to save you now." Hit me and my husband right between the eyes. The lyrics were what we were living. Right off the top of my head I'd say "*Wisteria*" and "*You Again*" are the RS songs that I feel I have lived. The place where my husband and I lived when my daughter was born is on a main artery in town and the property has gone into foreclosure. Once and a while I turn on the side street where I can really see the little garage apartment our baby came home to. "* Wisteria"* captures my feelings exactly. I feel the same when we go past my childhood home up in north county. Folks are always making changes to the front, so that is REALLY a "*Wisteria" *moment. *"You Again"* actually captures more of what I felt toward a relative I never thought I'd see again than a lover. I actually feel a little of the same with "*Balloon Man"*. You wonder if the one you love who are so far away could know and feel what you are living. Honestly, I don't watch "Desperate Housewives" but I've seen enough to know they live on Wisteria Lane. SOMEHOW RS's "*Wisteria" *should close at least one show!! My thots..... :-) ....CL ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2010 14:46:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Never Die Young I know there are people here that don't like Ms. Baez but that concert was one of the best I've ever been to! Each person got a chance to sing one of their own songs and it was the last time I saw Dave Carter. I was waiting to speak with him after the show but he was immersed in a deep conversation with someone. I thought to myself, I'll see him at Falcon Ridge. Of course I didn't but I will always cherish that concert. And yes, of course I remembered Lucy, since Richard always sings on her albums. I was wondering who else? I love Guinevere, one time I called it out for the encore while someone else called out My Name Joe. She played both! Such a sweetheart! Thanks, Evelyn for the input on Clara. I just thought it was a song about a mule. Goes to show you what I know! Janet - --- On Sun, 9/12/10, Carol Love wrote: > I've never seen Richard with anyone else on the ticket.
