Wolke" Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V10 #170 Oh, are we swapping 'fave song' stories? 'First song heard' stories? Here goes -- I'm a big James Keelaghan fan (he's the man who wrote "Cold Missouri Waters" and I recommend him to any of you who like Richard; his songs are of a more historical bent, with generous sprinklings of social comment to boot). Richard and James did a series of appearances together on a co-bill several years ago, and I was lucky enough to catch them in the DC area (I think it was somewhere in Maryland, but I can't remember where). I was rather amazed at the difference in the crowd; it was full of gothlings and other folks younger than the bunch I usually encountered at a Keelaghan show, but that was fine by me. I'd heard of Richard, even heard a couple of his songs, and was impressed by his draw and happy that I saw so many new faces. It was also packed; I was glad to have come early to get my usual seat near the front. James was, as he always is, in fine fettle, and sang many of my favorites. He was appreciated by the crowd, which was nice, but it was quite obvious that most had come to see Richard, and I was truly curious by the time the break was over. Richard opened with "You Stay Here". I nearly got whiplash. I could hardly breathe. At the time my children (twins) were about 8 or 9 (they are 15 years old now) and the song caught me like a punch in the gut. By the end of it I was holding back tears. So, he did a set of things from "Courier" and all those wonderful songs, and I was totally entranced. Even Jim noticed; he remarked (perhaps a bit nettled, but you have to have an ego to do what these guys do) that I seemed to be listening to Richard very closely. I think I mollified him when I, unusually enough, said, "But James, that's the way I listen to you, too." I usually don't have the timing. Thank goodness. I've been a fan ever since, and I've adored the songs, from AYHN to the multi-faceted ones like "Transit" and "Confession" (having been in the dot-com boom and bust, that one hit close), and "Fishing", and "There Goes Mavis", which tugs on me because of my soon to launch teenage children. I sing some of them, like "Courier" (I swear I must have been one in a prior life, that one hit me between the eyes solid), and "The Ballad of Mary Magdalene", and "Fennario" when I can play them. I wept at "I Am" when I heard it, and at "Before You Go", perhaps the instructions that God(dess?) gives EVERY new soul before they go, not just the baby Christ. I haven't heard a dud yet. Some just take more time to surface in my consciousness than others. I may have posted this before, but several years ago the Church of the Annunciation was taken over by gunmen. I saw RS play the night it was liberated. He mentioned it's liberation and said "this next song takes place, well, there." And then,of course, he played "Before You Go." It was very moving.
