I was a great fan of Susan Werner till about 4 years ago. I know she is classically educated in music, I believe, but I saw her at the Barns of Wolftrappe and the entire concert was Cole Porter, Gershwin songs, which is fine for me, if just a few mixed in with her singer song writer music, but it was too much. I was highly disappointed. Many left at intermission. I am sure for many that is fine, her Cole Porter type format, but it is not for me. And in no way, an I am saying she is terrible, etc., as I know for many, they like that format. I just wish I knew ahead of time, as then I could of made a decision to either go or not go. So now, I do not go to see Susan Werner anymore. Her last two CDs are brilliant - one an agnostic gospel album and the other merging classical music with covers of classic singer/songwriter songs. I'd say give her another shot. Last show I saw she only sang one song from the "Cole Porter" period. susan in alameda ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Jul 2009 20:33:30 +0300 From: Chris Foxwell Subject: Re: [RS] Susan Werner On Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 8:27 PM, Susan Krauss (sekrauss@comcast.net) < sekrauss@comcast.net> wrote: > Susan's more recent shows are a lot less Cole Porter and much more > singer-songwriter. I was also turned off somewhat by the "showtunes/Cole Porter" phase of Susan Werner's work, but it has proved to be short-lived. In retrospect, I applaud her decision to follow her muse and veer off in a new creative direction, despite it clearly not being what most of her fans wanted to hear. And, yeah, her latest two albums are great. "The Gospel Truth" is a special favorite of mine. Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). I wasn't crazy about her music, judging by the clips they played. One song that particularly turned me off was her "classical-style" cover of The Animals' "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," recorded with classical guitarist Rodrigo (presumably of Rodrigo y Gabriela). I love that song, and I love Rodrigo (con y sin Gabriela), but I thought the cover was just dreadful. Some of the instrumentation was nice, but the cover stripped the song of its spirit of desperation. I was very disappointed, having read such positive things about her here.
