I used to eagerly await the next Shin-Dig posts. Now, it's devolved into something that is akin to watching Nascar, or rubbernecking to see the carnage of a roadside wreck... To me, the purpose of these forums is to share our appreciation of the artist's work, while allowing for differences of opinion -- about the music. Admittedly, there may be songs that elicit spirited exchanges (State of the Union, The Ballad of Mary Magdalene, even Abuelita is a swipe at a dictatorial regime, and let's not forget On a Sea of Fleur de Lis and Nora), but I have to say, speaking as a middle school teacher, that several of you are acting, well, more adolescent than behooves you. Me? I continue to enjoy the new record (I like it more with each listen) and it's caused me to reach back into my collection (like many of you, I have them all). Listened to the Trucker Trilogy the other day, and that's a nice little set (Next Best Western, Willin', Kenworth of My Dreams) that makes me smile. Reminds me of the trip I took from NY to western PA on Rt. 80 to propose to my wife. Willin' brings back late night sessions with my college friend from Sri Lanka, and Kenworth remains a favourite for Bridey and me to sing loudly in the auto, to the chagrin of our adolescent children. And, while I appreciate your right to use whatever language you prefer, I must say, as a teacher of Catholicism, you might want to refrain from taking the Lord's name in vain. I'm guilty of it, too, of course, but I truly believe that this is a world made by a greater Being, and that Christ lived a model life that we should honor, not dishonor. Nothing north or west of Shropshire, or south of London. Given his musical roots, it's more than a little ironic that he's ignoring the Celtic fringes of the mainland. Hopefully he'll travel a little more in subsequent years. With any luck, Lucy K will be able to recommend the New Forest Arts Centre in glowing terms after she plays there in a couple of weeks, and we'll have him within walking distance next time! Travel on someone else's dime, get to see the sights and know folks, like that -- heck, I'd be there in a minute if someone else was paying my way. Go RIchard, have a ball! Just come back to the States, too! All of it is grist for the mill, I bet we get some songs from his European sojourn. Don't grouch, be happy that someone you LIKE can have a good time and earn money too! The man LIVES in Argentina, fer cryin out loud, he must like traveling in SOME way. There may be disadvantages to being a troubadour, but this ain't one of them. Back to lurkdom after my $.02 (adjusted for inflation)... I certainly didn't get the impression that anyone's suggesting he should limit his shows to the Americas. As for the other issue that's been dominating the forum in the last week, I think it's remarkable -- and a credit to the kind and decent people on this forum -- that in the five or more years I've been on this forum, this is the first time I've witnessed anyone flaming anyone else. This has never been a contentious place until now. Sure, there were strong disagreements about whether there were one or two couples in "Last Fare of the Day," but they were never hostile. No one has thrown flames until now. And you're an attorney in training? She may be; I'm not. I've been practicing law for over 20 years. And I think you might benefit from law school; it teaches one to look at an issue dispassionately and to respond without hysterics or histrionics. At least no one's shooting at you. Is someone shooting at you, Bart? Is being shot at a requirement for street cred here? A spark in the list and you shy away. Shame. She didn't shy away; she addressed the issue head-on. The issue, of course, being that this is a forum (or e-mail list, or whatever you want to call it) about Richard Shindell's music. Flaming about another singer/songwriter and his politics is off-topic. More to the point, flaming is completely out of character for this forum, which has never been a contentious place until now. If she were one to shy away, wouldn't she just have remained silent? Bartley Gallagher wrote: > Oh sorry. Too unpleasant?
