Here's the link: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=276711373&id=276711186&s=143441 I'm not sure that this recording is better than the versions on "Sparrows Point" and "Courier", but what you can hear is how the song sounded before he "tuned it up" -- literally. Ron G is going to have to verify this for me, but I believe he is playing his guitar in a different key/tuning for this older version. Check it out. Obviously, I'm listening to my iTunes this Sunday morning and I just listened to Janis sing "Piece of My Heart" -- I'm not so sure this is a song for RS to cover, but I was left wondering what it might sound like if someone like Lucy, Dar, Anjte, Jonatha Brooke, etc took it on and made it acoustic. It would be sort of the same thing RS did with "Born in the USA" or like what T.V. Carpio did with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in "Across the Universe". (If you didn't see that movie or listen to the soundtrack, Carpio did a completely different tempo, tear you soul out version of this Beatles chestnut. It's no longer boppy and happy, but the song of someone who never will be holding that hand and it's killing her softly....) *Ciao!* .....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 9:04:42 -0800 From: Subject: Re: [RS] "lost" shindell tracks >> I just had the iTunes "Genius" feature recommend this album to me, and lo and behold there was a track of RS singing "On a Sea of Fleur de Lis" three whole years before he released "Sparrow's Point". << I don't do iTunes, but I imagine that's the early version that was on one of the pre-"Sparrows Point" Fast Folk releases. Somewhat faster, different tuning, and decidedly less beautiful than the version he eventually released on SP. I personally think it's uncomfortable to listen to. >> I just listened to Janis sing "Piece of My Heart" -- I'm not so sure this is a song for RS to cover, but I was left wondering what it might sound like if someone like Lucy, Dar, Anjte, Jonatha Brooke, etc took it on and made it acoustic. << Faith Hill did a version on her debut CD. Not sure you'd call it acoustic (if what you mean by "acoustic" is a solo ballad), but give it a listen. I personally think it's uncomfortable to listen to. .........I wasn't going to be that blunt, but it is rougher than the finished product. I do like hearing how a piece evolves and how RS tinkered with song over the next three years. The "Sparrow's Point" version is probably the definitive for me. Richard's voice is particularly clear and deep on that cut. *Sometimes* he gets a little bit nasal, but his register stays down in a wonderful baritone for the entirety of the SP cut. > > > >> I just listened to Janis sing "Piece of My Heart" -- I'm not so sure > this is a song for RS to cover, but I was left wondering what it might sound > like if someone like Lucy, Dar, Anjte, Jonatha Brooke, etc took it on and > made it acoustic. << > > Faith Hill did a version on her debut CD. I would like to hear something like what Jonatha Brooke did with both "God Only Knows" (Beach Boys) and "Eye in the Sky" (Alan Parsons). Especially with "Eye in the Sky", JB took what had been a 70's art rock staple and completely strips down the big production it into a beautiful and sparse ballad with very limited instrumentation. For me, that is an AMAZING cover. That was no Michael Bolton remake, but a complete re-rendering of the song. I liked the Alan Parson's version OK, but Jonatha took it to some place that touches my soul. Have you ever heard it?? If not, here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00122JRF4/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk11 Enjoy!! .....Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V10 #28 ***********************************
