About ten years ago RS mentioned that hearing the all-star bluegrass band and eponymous album, Old & In The Way, saved him from a life of listening to prog rock. He said this by way of introducing a cover from that record. I know it wasn't Wild Horses but I forget which tune he did -- maybe one of the Peter Rowan tunes? I bet he's played every cut tho. - -john Carol Love wrote: > I had always heard that Gram Parsons had a hand in writing the > Rolling Stones "Wild Horses", I NEVER knew he had recorded it himself > until I was paging through a "best covers" site. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2009 09:19:36 -0500 From: "Carol Love" Subject: Re: [RS] Richard and Bob and Bruce On Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 10:57 PM, wrote: > Carol wrote: > > >> ", I can't think of RS ever covering a main stream rock ballad. << > > Then Norm wrote: > What about Born in the USA? ............Oh, you call THAT mainstream???? :-) As the kids would say, "My bad!" And I blew it on Senor (Tales of Yankee Power). But Dylan is SO prolific, I let myself off on that one. Also IMHO Dylan falls into the Randy Newman/Warren Zevon/John Prine/Tom Waits school of songwriters. Their pens are much mightier than their voices and often it is the covers of their tunes that see daylight instead of the originals. Three people heard Waits' "Downtown Train" until Rod Stewart covered it. (Ron, I hear you wretching all the way down here in Florida !!) Of course, that was back when Rod could do a cover. I won't defend any of his 21st Century releases. Sigh. ....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2009 09:32:35 -0500 From: jimcolbert@aol.com Subject: [RS] sunshine on a folkie day This made me laugh out loud. In addition to the covers he's officially released on his own?CDs or with Cry Cry Cry, he sure has covered some great (and varied) stuff. Here's just a short list of some of the songs I've heard him do: Love Hurts (Felice and Boudleaux Bryant) Four Green Fields (Tommy Makem) Sin City (Gram Parsons/Chris Hillman) Louisiana 1927 (Randy Newman) Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead) Making Plans (Dolly Parton) Once in a Very Blue Moon (Patrick Alger) I Got Mine (Roy Bookbinder) Bleecker Street (Paul Simon) America (Paul Simon) Farewelll to Saint Dolores (Dave Carter) Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen) Hard Times Come Again No More (Stephen Foster) Banks of the Pontchartrain (Traditional) Paddys Green Shamrock Shore (Traditional) Feel free to add to the list. Oh, I forgot "Making Plans"!! That was soooooo good and as I recall he included a rather witty intro before it was played. .....Carol On Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 10:04 AM, wrote: > >> About ten years ago RS mentioned that hearing the all-star bluegrass > band and eponymous album, Old & In The Way, saved him from a life of > listening to prog rock. My favorite covers are Paul Simon's America and Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat.
