Mapquest said that the place was 20 minutes from my daughter's job. That might be true three in the morning but 5:30 p.m. on Friday is quite another story. Talk about no one giving an inch, I don't think my sister will recover driving through the Holland Tunnel anytime soon. We managed to get there in time, they held our table and we even managed to get a cup of coffee. It's held in the rotunda of an actual court house and the acoustics are incredible. The music and applause floated up above us and we waited for an echo which came a second or two later. The announcer (kid) kept calling Richard Mr. Shindell and thanked the "old ladies" (his words) who were manning the ticket counter. Needless to say we booed him. It was a great show even though Richard said he was nursing a cold. He did mention that he won't be putting the song, State of the Union, on the new album and that the album will be late now because he has to find/write another song. Somehow I don't think it will be here before the New Year. Here's the set list. I'll leave Bart to comment on the IMAC concert last night. The Island Fishing Acadian Driftwood SWCD A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cook song Blue Northern Lights - Ollabelle song, this would be a good substitute for State of the Union Transit Hazel's House Get Up Clara Reunion Hill Sitting on Top of the World Mary Magdelen AYHN Texas Rangers Last Fare of the Day Next Best Western Mavis - my daughter, who is not a fan of this song, drew a pretty picture of a bird on my set list, named it Mavis and put a bubble over its head saying, "Even I hate this song" encore - Che Guevara T-Shirt Luckily the ride home wasn't as traumatic! It was my favorite of the new songs.?But I guess?given the results of the recent?election, the song might not be as relevant, so I guess I understand.?Same reason, I reckon, that Antje Duvekot's not putting "Christian Boys" (a not-so-subtle slam at GWB and the current administration) on her upcoming release either. I didn't like "State of the Union" all that much at first, but it's grown on me. Coincidentally, I used a lyric from that song to sum up my feelings about the election results to my friends and family back home. I guess it makes sense to exclude the song now, but I don't necessarily feel like it's **suddenly without value. (Beyond its musical value, I mean.) I wish he'd reconsider. Then I smacked myself in the head. "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress". I, too, took a reluctant daughter to see RS when he played Tampa this past year. We live about 30 miles from the venue, and my daughter is 16. It's a lot less parental wear and tear to just buy her a ticket and take her with us than to wonder what she is doing with all that time in the evening hours while we are 45 minutes away. Anyway, Richard did "Nora" which he said had been a special request. Later, after he did "Arrowhead", he mentioned that his "Mama" was there at the show. (Sitting right in front of us as it turns out...) That left me thinking "Nora" was probably for her, which then left me with a bunch of other questions. Is his Mom's name "Nora"?? Does she worry about something that may be a sin?? Do I think too much about special requests and their meanings?? How that relates to my daughter. She had JUST finished studying "Abelard and Heloise" in her World History class. She had been so intrigued by this romance that she actually bought a book about their love story. And I had introduced her to "Nora" for a musical connection. So, by sheer serendipity, Richard played the one song that would get my daughter's real attention. I haven't seen "Nora" show up on anyone else's playlists. The show was AMAZING. It was just him and his guitar, and it was before he hurt his finger. He sold out the venue weeks before the show date. Don't ask me why, but I didn't really get into "Last Fare of the Day" until I heard him do it live. Now it's one of my favorite songs in his catalog. I hope we don't have to wait so long to see him in Central Florida again. ....Carol (former poster now returning...) I guess there are a lot of folk fans with a sick sense of humor. Wasn't there a Shindell CD awhile back that had a "hidden" track?? Wouldn't it be nice if he did that with "State of the Union"?? ....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2008 16:50:28 -0500 From: "Vanessa Wills" Subject: Re: [RS] Brennan Coffeehouse Concert November 21, 2008 I'm really bummed that "State of the Union" is not making it onto the new record. :-/ It's my favorite song out of the new batch, too. I think it's a shame not to put it on. I don't know about it not being relevant, anymore. I'll grant that Obama's hardly going to be doing his John Wayne impression anytime soon, but the last I heard, the United States government was not about to stop "drilling and shooting" any time soon. Maybe I missed something while I was busy reading about how Obama's likely to keep Dubya's Defense Secretary on board, or how Hilary "No, I won't say it was a mistake to vote for war on Iraq" just accepted the position of Secretary of State.
