I was able to get myself down to Santa Monica on Saturday night to McCabe's for the show--just went on my own since it was that or miss it entirely. I'm glad I made it...what a treat. The traffic was stop and go on the 101, so I didn't have any time to spare. I took a wrong exit...went on South Bundy instead of North Bundy, and then headed the wrong way down Pico since I was all turned around. A call to McCabe's set me straight and still I wasn't sure. But then...there was Richard standing out on the street in front, so there I was .... just in time! (Had to blast Transit in the car as I was going the wrong way entirely.) Parking was easy on a side street. Lucky day. On to the show. I went in and found a perfectly great seat in the back. It was good to be in a room of people with ears all open and just completely absorbing the music. The whole concert was thus. Richard played (not all in correct order): Pancho and Lefty (opened) Kenworth of My Dreams Get Up Clara (ouch on the finger!!) Sitting on Top of the World Northbound 35 (State of the Union) (Methadone song was what I wrote down)--ovation for that one Reunion Hill Sparrow Point Waist Deep in the Big Muddy Fishing (oops, sang a verse 1 and half times....then corrected....charming) Cold Missouri Waters Balloon Man Hazel's House Last Fare of the Day Transit Mavis Encore: Juggler in Traffic The new songs are notable. It's going to be a great "album." He shared some stories...talked about Hazel, his family, chopping wood, compassionate health care out in the Pampas with the finger--no charge for the visit!! Hazel was big Yahtzee player. I am going to play Yahtzee this week again. I loved the story of the Balloon Man in Buenos Aires and the conflagration with the dog walker at an intersection. I'm glad to know the Balloon Man is in the world. I lingered in the store--not enough money for a guitar but I bought some ocarinas to share in my classroom and to see if I can make some better ones in my ceramics class. His finger is still lopsided...needs to grow back. He borrowed a new small guitar--but sorry I don't know guitars well enough to tell you what it was. He played his old favorite that he bought in Georgia with the misaligned repair more than the borrowed one, and it sounded wonderful. He chatted about the state of things and the coming election. McCabe's is having a 50th anniversary, and he said that if places like McCabe's didn't exist he'd be driving a cement truck. A lady yelled out, "Would it be a Kenmore?" Everyone laughed when he replied that well, a Kenmore is a dishwasher, and then that yeah maybe it'd be a Kenworth cement truck. McCabe's is a great place to enjoy music that we love!! I'm going to keep my ears open for the next time Richard makes it to California. I told him I wished I had $30,000 to contribute to have him come paint my house. And maybe I'll make it to Argentina someday. Thanks for the show Richard, and we don't care if your hair is mussed (that blasted mirror and reality check at the top of the stairs.)
