I checked out his website to see if I could find some of his music to listen to and in doing so found his list of very favorite.cds. It was an eclectic list that included folk, rock, classical, country and more. And....on that list was Richard's Sparrow Point. Harvey sez - Great folk-style songwriter, with rich voice, deep songs, and good production, one of the real talents of modern singer-sonwriterism. From NYC. His later albums are good also, but I am partial to this one as a brilliant and listenable album. What I found also on the list, interestingly enough, was one of Richards favorite cds, Nic Jones Penguin Eggs of which Harvey sez - Mysterious English ballad singer and voodoo guitarist- recorded in 1980 on Topic in England- recently available in US from Shanachie. His best work, and only one available in US I think. (I have 4 or 5 earlier LP's of his) To my mind this guy is the white Robert Johnson. His guitar playing and singing sound like 3 people, and his version of "Canadee-i-o" is one of the great recordings ever done by a guy with an acoustic guitar. He was badly injured almost 20 years ago in a car accident, and there will be no more Nic Jones recordings. This guy plays many instruments. If you want to hear a good guitar piece - -imoho- go to Harvey's site at www.woodpecker.com and click on downloads and audio. Listen to Racing the Storm. "Sparrows Point" is on my all-time top ten CD list, and pretty easily my favorite Richard CD.? Interestingly, it's got four songs I pretty much always skip, "Are You Happy Now" (because I've heard it enough), "Memory of You" and "Howling at the Trouble" (because they don't do much for me) and "You Again" (for personal reasons), but it's also got four of my top-ten Richard songs: "Courier," "Sea of Fleur-de-Lis," "Sparrows Point" and "By Now."? That's tough to beat, and to me, that CD still holds up even considering all the brilliant stuff Richard has done in the years since its release. ? He's a fine autoharpist as well. I only have his Autoharp Album right now, but if he sings more songs on his other albums, then I'll have to get some of his other cds. Thanks a lot.
