Russ Rentler, MD, turned musician, turned instrument maker was the opening act. The Venue coordinator/booker/producer made it known that Lucy was down the road performing for a competing venue. Richard actually was very funny when he mentioned taking names so he and Lucy could compare attendees. Russ brought a guitar, banjo, autoharp, table dulcimer, and resonator and used them all . He played a short set (30 minutes) before Richard took the stage. I have also seen Russ in Bethlehem Pa open for John Gorka. There was some funny mention of John and Richard both studying Philosophy and where they ended up and Russ becoming a MD and minoring in Philosophy. Richard was cracking himself up last night. He was dressed in Levis that were rolled up, boots and a flannel shirt. His hair is almost shoulder length and he looks healthy. He had a Gibson guitar, an octave mandolin or bouzaki that he got in england. Its a Romanian model based on a Irish one only black and a Taylor electric guitar . ( RG that is for you) . I couldnt tell if the Gibson is old and in impeccible condition or new. I didnt ask. there were two sets..... the first set was alternating covers and RS songs. and the second set was new songs and RS songs.MuddyFishingBorn in the USA on Octave MadolinCotton Dress Senor Mary MagdaleneArrowheadReunion Hill Hazels HouseTransit Mavis Waiting for a StormNorthbound 35 Sitting on Top of the World -New songsParasol AntsThe Balloon Man- Come on Clara- sounds like Erie Canal style American Folk songRichard makes guitar playing look so easy. I so enjoy watching him play. its sometimes looks like he is not even touching the strings. I also didnt need to hear Are you happy now but missed Kenworth and Next Best Western. I would have liked to hear Famous Raincoat or Deportee but i didnt ask Richard to play themHe said to me that he has been back in the US for 4 months and told the audience he is living in Harlem and will go to a bar today to watch the Giants. He said in 1990 he went to a Bar on Broadway and will do the same.I am gald that I went to Chatham last night. I havent seen him since Falcon Ridge and havent seen enough RShindell. I hope being in NY means i can see more of him. Sharon ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V9 #192 ***********************************
