Hey all . . . a pal of mine from up in Albany just sent me this review of the January 13 show at Caffe Lena: RG _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Armed with a new bazouki from England, a killer Taylor electric tuned to DADGAD and a bad-ass Gibson accoustic tuned to DADGAD and retuned straight later in the set, Richard was very relaxed and seemed very happy to be back in Saratoga at Caffe Lena Sunday January 13.Here is the set list with some notes. - -Waist Deep in the Big Muddy - -Fenario...absolutely great guitar playing. - -Che Guevarra T-Shirt...played on the electric. - -Fishing...slow version like the live Vermont version on electric. It was stunning to hear it this way. - -Summer Wind Cotton Dress...on his new bazouki he got while in England. - -Parasol Ants...on the bazouki with a hysterical story about how he has to reach for odd songs since Bob Dylan has already written every song there is. I really like this new one. - -Get Up Clara...back to the accoustic, another new one. - -Balloon Man...a third new one, on accoustic. He seemed very pleased by the crowd reaction (Lena was totally sold out). - -Arrowhead - -Reunion Hill...on electric. Probably my favorite song of the night. He seemed very lost within himself while playing this.Great reaction from the crowd as well. - -So Say The Whipporwill...retuned the accoustic to straight tuning, he seemed to be struggling with what to play. The crowd really got into it. - -Last Fare of the Day...turned down a 1/2 dozen requests until my wife yelled this one up. He smiled when he heard the request. He also very emphatically said the couple at the beginning and the end of the song were NOT the same couple, and he said "I should know". Got a big laugh with that comment. Great version. - -State of the Union...another new one, very powerful in delivery. - -Mary Magdeline...big applause when he started it, a wonderful version. - -Sitting on Top of the World...from the South of Delia CD...on electric. Stunning guitar work. - -There Goes Mavis...a real crowd favorite and final song of the set. - -Texas Rangers...the seating was so tight, Richard waived off leaving the stage for the encore and simply stayed there. Good version of this song. He clearly seemed to enjoy the crowd. Spoke about living in Harlem for the next few months (I think his wife, who is a professor, has a semester job in NYC). Spoke quickly about doing a new record of all his new quirky songs, but it did not sound like it was anywhere close. I think he only has 4 new ones in the bag. If this is an indication of the tour, by all means, try and get to see him in the next few months. ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever. I think the writer's position that the song is "initially pastoral" but has an underlying "ominous tone" is pretty accurate, since although we really don't know what happens to Mavis, it's pretty likely that she's not long for this world. On the other hand, from the review: >> Shindell's own anti-war sentiments were expressed later on with his own "Mama" and "Reunion Hill," two Civil War parables where the innocence of youth is crushed on the battlefield. << Ah, yes, "Mama." Heh. Not. RG ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever. I'd say it was obvious, not ominous that Mavis would soon be dead. Ever the optimist, Janet ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing.
