Maybe someone else knows?" It was Richard's version of an old ragtime/blues staple 'I Got Mine'. Personally I know this song from an old Ry Cooder album but Richard had attempted to copy a version by one of his favourite guitarists Roy Bookbinder that he first heard on an album "Some people play guitar like a lot of people don't". There was a discussion here about this song way back in April 2003 which offers more explanation...here's the link. http://www.grassyhill.org/stax/shindell/index.cgi?j=2452733 But here's something REALLY spooky. The night after he played this song at the house concert I drove Richard in to the radio interview /session at the BBC in London's West End. On the way there he asked whether we had time to take a detour up to the Green Note in Camden Town where he thought he'd left something after Thursday's gig. We were tight on time but decided to go for it. When we got there Richard dashed out and I sat in the car to guard the guitar and rucksack. Surprisingly Richard was gone for quite some time and when he finally returned he looked as if he'd seen a ghost....as he dashed into the restaurant he'd brushed past some people having a cigarette out on the pavement. Apologising to each other they spotted each other's American accents and stopped to exchange a quick word. The guy looked vaguely familiar till it suddenly dawned on Richard that he was talking to none other than.....Roy Bookbinder. So....what are the chances of that?...in London of all places? Richard played 'I Got Mine' again on Sunday at Twickenham (and told the story). The intro to the song is note for note from Bookbinder's version....except Richard flat picks it rather than using fingers. The song defied logic for me...if you listen to the lightning ragtime picking with closed eyes you'd swear he was playing it with thumb and three fingers on the right hand. No...it's all done with a single flat pick. Outrageous playing that managed even to make the complex arpeggios on 'You Stay Here' sound elementary. I love Roy Bookbinder! A couple of years ago we saw him. There was a crying kid in the audience and when the mom finally took the kid out, Roy made a comment along the line of, "Good riddance!" I think he might have actually said those very words. A cranky old guy but boy can he play!
