Very tired and achy from the camping - but it was well worth it! It was fantastic to finally get to see Richard live - twice - he performed a set on Sunday afternoon as well as the main evening concert. He also did a meet and greet / workshop, which I didn't attend, as I think Crucible or Megson were playing at the same time (so many bands, so little time). Hopefully he'll do a meet and greet after the gig in London we're going to later this week. RS was in fine voice, and he seemed to be well received (given that he isn't so well known in the UK). In fact, as we were walking through the campsite after his first set, we heard some people chatting about "the American" and how good he was (which was lovely to hear). His first set went something like this (not sure about the order): Reunion Hill You Stay Here AYHN Balloon Man Sitting on Top of the World A Summer Wind, a Cotton Dress Senor (a request) Parasol Ants Transit Cold Missouri Waters There Goes Mavis In his evening set, he repeated some of the songs from earlier (although not the new material), and added Next Best Western, Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, Fenario, and Wisteria (there may have been more - my memory is a little fuzzy). The new songs sounded excellent, particularly Parasol Ants. I was expecting something incredibly off the wall from previous posts on the list, but it made sense after RS explained what inspired him (in typically humorous style). Perhaps he'll play more new material at the gigs later this week. The unexpected highlight (for me) was 'There Goes Mavis', which sounded gorgeous - it previously wasn't a favourite, but it sounded stunning live. Richard had also borrowed a handsome looking bouzouki from one of the instrument stands, which he used to great effect in his afternoon session, especially in ASWACD. He seemed quite taken with it, but I suspect he chose not to buy it in the end, as he didn't use it again in the evening. Of the two sets, the smaller, earlier one was my favourite - RS seemed more open and chatty. Still, it was great to see him perform to such a large audience later - although it would have been wonderful to see him with band as well. RS also apologised for the fact he hadn't been to the UK since his tour with Joan Baez (?) ten years ago. He said that main reason was his move to Argentina, and the fact that he felt he'd needed to concentrate on maintaining his career in the US. Whatever the reason, I hope that positive responses from audiences in the UK will encourage him to return more frequently - it was such a treat to see him! Did anyone else get to see Richard at Shrewsbury? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks for the report Emma, am really looking forward to seeing him and hearing some of his new songs and I agree, he should come over to Europe more often.
