["Matthew Bullis" Subject: [RS] Meaning of Sparrow's Point, the song? Hello, this time, rather than just asking for interpretations of a song, I thought I'd go through it and give what I thought it might be, and see how correct I am. This is the way I tend to dissect songs, line by line, wondering why each line is in the song, especially if it's veiled. My name is William Taylor, and I was born in 24. Is the name significant? Too late to know the great fallen Is that World War One? But in time to know the great fall. The stock market crash, or more devastating, The Great Depression? When my father died with money, and my mother lived in spite, So the family was rich, and the wife resented the father dying? We laughed when nothing was funny, but how we wept when nothing was left. The Great Depression again, plus the family trouble? So I left her there in Boonetown, when I reached fifteen years. Boone, North Carolina? Young boy ventures out on his own? Nowadays this wouldn't be acceptable, as he'd be a runaway. And I travelled mostly northeast, with my head held mostly down. Keeping hidden from the police or others wanting to take him back home? skipping a bit ahead: They gave me a coat and three days rest, Do you only get that much time before being moved on, mission rules? A shroud of steam surrounded me, and I was borne away. He took the steam train? And I found myself at Sparrow's Point, with a slingshot in my hand. Sparrow's Point is a high school in Baltimore, established in 1908. I found a Jacob Taylor listed in the history of the school, so maybe William was a relation? What's the slingshot for? skipping ahead again: Three days west of Normandy, with a rifle in my hand. So he joined the armed forces, but if he's west of Normandy, is he three days from being victorious at Normandy, if my history is correct, or have they had D-Day three days ago, and are moving on to the next assignment? The song is in a minor key, so is William expecting trouble in the next assignment after Normandy, or is he heading into victory overall, but maybe there were still US casualties? Thanks a lot for reading the interpretation, and I hope I have some of it correct, and hopefully you can fill in missing details.
