Just that I could see a stylistic connection, which could be made clearer by a listen to those Iain Matthews discs. Mercy Street would have fit perfectly on Walking a Changing line. Now as a bit of trivia to Vanessa's post, did you know Anne Sexton had a rock band in the 60's? It's true, I swear it! Let's just say, I enjoy her poetry... - -Jim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 May 2007 14:15:20 -0400 From: B Gallagher Subject: [RS] Re: Mercy Street Nice essay on Mercy Street Vanessa. I too like the song very much and do like Richard's version, and don't agree with someone, in who's ears I trust, that Shindell's take is a "real throwaway". That said, it PALES to the original found on Peter Gabriel's "So", Geffen, 1986, (produced by Daniel Lanois) Buy this one folkies, it will show you're "with it" circa 1986 and still hip. I played 'Mercy Street' for my wife, who immediately wondered why RS tried to cover it. "It's Peter Gabriel's song, it's been done...his voice is too distant, too monotone, ...I don't like it"! Well we had to follow it with the original, then the whole of "So", then "Peter Gabriel Plays Live" disk 2, with 'Solsbury Hill', 'On the Air' and 'Biko'. So, while 'Mercy Street' is not as good as the original, I don't skip it like I do 'Born in the USA' (a disaster - doesn't he have anyone that will tell him when something just don't work?) and the Spanish one, which is nicely done (don't know 'bout the electric guitar though).
