A different mental time picture than 1856 that some may image. The boat had twin diesel engines, that were not yet invented in 1856. BTW Humpback and Senor are my favorites on South, so far. Least is Born in the USA. My ears tend to lean to the more traditional songs, I guess. I'm skipping "Sitting on Top of the World" and "Solo" pretty regularly, and "USA" (now tied with "Smiling" for my all time least favorite RS song) all the time. (But you never really know with lyrics pages; seems like half the time they're transcribed incorrectly.) Most prominent of course are the two verses he left out of his cover, but there are also some other changes: - --Ron is right, Richard definitely says "the Aussi style," and not "in a fine old style." - --Richard sings, "the harpoon and the line fly true," not "fly through." - --"imbedding deep into the whale," not "very deep into the whale." - --"that humpback sinks below," not "that humpback's sent below." There are also more minor cosmetic differences: "sharp look out me lads," not "my lads"; "drive them into Byron Bay" and "shoot them with our gun," not "him"; etc. I'm inclined to think that the author of the lyrics page just heard the lyrics incorrectly, since many of the differences are phonetic, but who knows. Richard could of course have made slight changes to achieve a different feel; his cover strikes me as more "resignedly reflective" of the whaling cycle, as was pointed out by someone else a few weeks back, as compared to those written lyrics. A few days ago they played a Bach concerto followed by a solo piece in Spanish, followed by BITUSA from SOD. And the announcer said this was his favorite song off the CD. Maybe what he meant was it's the most accessible for their audience? Hmm I'm still chuckling over the image of Richard being tangled to his arch nemesis the great garden tree (with vining twine perhaps?) Nic Jones was known for forgetting where he learned songs at times and he may have changed it around a little (as happens often in folk music). When the album was released on CD, he credited Harry Robertson and the CD says that it is derived from Robertson's "Ballina Whalers". If anyone really likes the song (and likes whaling/songs of the sea) they should check out Jones' works from the 70's and 80's (Jones was in a horrible accident and never was able to play music afterwards due to injuries to his hands). He is really great. Unfortanately, many of his albums aren't available (I luckily have them on vinyl) but his two live albums and "Penguin Eggs" would be a perfect start.
