See, I'm not really looking for artists that straddle a country/folk sound (Red Molly, Gillian Welch, Crooked Still), but rather looking for specific songs by more traditional folkies (Richard, Dar, Lucy, Kris, Mark, Lori, Dave/Tracy, Cheryl W, Deb T, etc.) that would be a "country-leaning" intro to their music. So, for example, I'm thinking that something like "Flinty Kind of Woman," while definitely New England in content, at least has a country-ish arrangement to it . . . more so than any other Dar song that comes to mind. So, it would allow me to at least get my friend listening to Dar, and I can then slowly work my way to the folkier stuff. Which is why I'm thinking either "Kenworth" or "TV Light" for Richard. One's about a truck, and one's got pedal steel. Unfortunately, his wife doesn't leave him in either, and his dog doesn't run away. ;-) Thanks, y'all! I prefer American folk to British (usually) precisely because of the country influences. Some ideas: How about Lucy's 'One Good Reason'? Or something from 'Drum, Hat Buddha' - like '41 Thunderer'. As for Richard, perhaps 'Arrowhead'. Not sure about Dar, the only one that sticks out is 'Iowa'. Lori has a 'twangy' quality to her voice, so something like 'Bible Song'. And practically anything by John Prine... Emma Manchester, UK ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 May 2007 07:56:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Deb Woodell Subject: Re: [RS] A little bit Country. I suggest David Olney. I thought someone else would've suggested him by now (Jim C!) I think the songs Roses, Dillinger, Deeper Well are good starting points. When she falls in love with his music, which I'm sure she will, you can sneak in Barabbas, Jerusalem Tomorrow and Women Across the River. Someone mentioned Rod Picott, he's excellent too. Try the songs Girl from Arkansas, Down to the Bone and Baby Blue. When I lured my sister and nieces over to songs other than the top 40 being played on every radio station, I started with Are You Happy Now. TV Light is a good one too. Next Best Western is kind of countryish. Hope this helps. Janet Tired of spam? Yahoo! Walden Well sounded very nice. That was my first time hearing it. I didn't get to hear all of it, had a phone call during the next-to-last verse, but I definitely liked what I heard. - --Chris On 5/6/07, Janet Cinelli wrote: > > The interview with RS is on right now! There are freeware / shareware programmes that can be downloaded in order to record streaming internet broadcasts / radio - they work by recording directly from your sound card, although I couldn't comment as to their efficacy. I'm unsure as to why WFUV operates with such restrictions, as WNUR and other internet radio stations offer downloads of shows with complete songs. but then, I'm no intellectual property lawyer. :-) Emma ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V9 #79 **********************************
