Ever since hearing that version, I haven't been all that crazy about RS' version because, to my ears, it's so similar. In no way did he reinvent the song, he just chose to cover the lesser-known version of the song. I also don't like "Solo" as much as I first did. I have a few other more traditional versions (The Mammals, Pete Seeger to name a few) which I prefer....I find the electric guitar misplaced. But I still very much like the rest of the album. Adam jcolb@barashgroup.com wrote: Richard's is certainly different from the BITUSA version that we typically hear (and yeah, that's my least favorite album of his, incidentally) and obviously the SOD version is distinctly Richard's, but I keep getting the feeling folks think he reinvented this song. Uh, he didn't! Definitely his own stamp on the song, but it's not worlds apart from some of the versions Springsteen does live. - -jpc, somewhere near Talleyrand Park - --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? I am happy to have ANY new RS material, but always anticipate the rich originals. tw ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2007 08:14:16 -0700 From: "Bill Chmelir" Subject: [RS] Song Writers Block? You guys bring up good points about my question. Mostly I thought my question was a clever turn on a phrase that had to be written - Song Writers Block instead of Writers Block. Ha ha... A million laughs Mary. But yah, you're right. Richard puts out an original CD about every 3 or 4 years. I guess I hadn't ever seen his discography written out. I still maintain that a studio recorded cover has to be really special to be good if the listener has heard and likes the original. Otherwise I will chose to listen to the original. I mean did Mariah Cary really think that she could do I'll Be There better than The Jackson Five? Did The Scorpions really think that they could do I Can't Explain better than The Who? I think Richard's Born in the USA is good because it is very different sounding than Springsteen's. On the other hand Richard's Mercy Street doesn't do it for me. I'd rather listen to Peter Gabriel's original. The other songs work for me because I've never heard the originals. Having only heard the original artists recordings for 2 of the 12 songs I can't say if Shindell has achieved something special here. Is there anybody out there that is familiar with a higher percentage of the originals and has an opinion? Hey you guys, Earlier this week I posted that Richard would be John Platt's guest this Sunday, 5/6, at 10 AM EDT. Well, someone passed that note along to John, who wrote to tell me that this week the interview segment will air at 9 AM. According to John, if you miss the show this Sunday it will run again on Monday, May 14 at 9:00 pm as part of the Words & Music series and then will be posted in the archives. The 10 AM hour will feature a tribute by Phoebe Snow to her daughter Valerie Rose, who passed away on March 18. There is a very informative article about Phoebe and Valerie at this link: http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,260381,00.html#2 Fox News? Who knew? Anyway, thanks to John for getting this information to me, and for giving Phoebe Snow the forum to do a tribute that I am sure will be touching and heartfelt. While John's program is always worth catching this week's show looks to be a very special edition. Admittedly, BITUSA was intially tough to take, as I had only heard the Reagan-era version, and no acoustic re-working by Springsteen, but its growing on me. I think his version of Acadian Driftwood is better than The Band's, however. How crazy would it be to claim that SOD is actually better than an RS record, by which I mean better than, say, your least favorite RS album?
