I've just received some really excellent show posters from Hatch Show Print in Nashville that should be of interest - we had them printed for framing and certainly won't be using these for advertising! We will sell these to the festival mailing list over the next week or so, but we only have a very limited number (200 minus the copies that committee members will snag), and I thought it would be nice to offer them here before they all get snapped up by members of the festival mailing list. http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/sffposter.htm best wishes Neil - ------------------------------------------------- Fish Records Suppliers of singer/songwriter, folk & acoustic music Shrewsbury, England neil@fishrecords.co.uk http://www.fishrecords.co.uk tel +44 (0) 1743 231546 fax +44 (0) 1743 354354 - ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 May 2007 15:42:06 -0400 From: B Gallagher Subject: [RS] Born in the USA Hear Hear, Ron. Richard Shindell is indeed in the top echelon of American songwriters, living, dead, or otherwise. I saw Bruce Springsteen on Charlie Rose some time ago do a very slow acoustic version of Born in the USA...knocked me out. What a different song from the rousing misunderstood anthem that Ronald Reagan tried to steal for his 1984 campaign. I have to echo RockinRonD's sentiments regarding Richard's decision to put out an album - did I just write album? - of covers rather than a new CD of his own music. I my opinion covers are rarely as good as the original. There are the rare exceptions - Example - Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower. Covers are great live but when I hear versions recorded in the studio, and I already really like the original, they don't do it for me. In this case I am unframiliar with most of the original recordings so in my case I think the album will work. I still would prefer originals. Is Richard experiencing song writers block? I love the idea of Richard showcasing his talents as an arranger, chooser, and interpreter of songs. This is not some "covers album" where a producer picks hit songs and lets the "talent" sing them to pay the rent. Richard made this album himself, with a lot of care and creativity. He is, after all, a folk singer - these are stories he wants to tell in his own voice. Richard's own original songs come at their own pace. I feel sure that when the next batch is ready, he won't make us wait. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2007 22:19:16 -0400 From: "Norman Johnson" Subject: [RS] genius takes time Bill wrote: >> Is Richard experiencing song writers block? << Richard never was prolific. Richard's albums of originals: Sparrows Point 1992 Blue Divide 1994 Reunion Hill 1997 Somewhere Near Patterson 2000 Vuelta 2004 And the last three of these albums each contained at least two covers. Also, it's not like Richard released this album INSTEAD of releasing an album of original material. I'm sure if he had written an album's worth of material, he would have been more than happy (both from creative and financial perspectives) to release it. But since that wasn't in the cards, I'm happy to have this as opposed to nothing . . . although this isn't an album I'm likely to grab when I want to hear Richard Shindell music.
