Greetings listers... Does anybody know who asked RS if they could tape Ann Arbor and how they wanted to tape the show, since he apparently turned them down? RS told me I could make audience tapes at any of his shows now (He told me this in front of several group members at The Boulton Center in Bayshore last summer.) Although I don't make audience tapes anymore, I would love to hear what the trio sounds like! There was a taper in the audience with RS's permission at Boulton Center, and he was nice enough to share the show with me, but it is kind of distant and not a very good recording due to the distance from the stage that the taper set up his microphones... That night at the meet and greet, RS asked me if that was me. I do not try and tape RS anymore, because he had at one point asked me not to. That night he explained to me that he would not allow soundboard recordings, but would be happy to allow me to make audience tapes. His offer was to let me tape any show by microphone, as long as I was not in the sight lines. Unfortunately, all my archival is now done with hard disc multi tracks off the console. Recently, They used some of my recordings to create several live CD's of several popular folk acts including some fairly big names, so going back to making audience tapes is like taking three steps back. I am still trying (hard) to get the Bottom Line show that occurred in tandem with a show by Buddy and Julie Miller where they shared the band. The first night was RS with Larry Cambell, Lincoln Schleiffer, and Dennis McDermott. The second night was Buddy and Julie with Larry, Lincoln, and Dennis. Although I know the person who made console recordings of these shows, he has been unwilling to give them up. I would be more than happy to get audience tapes of this set of shows if they exist. I think they were in the spring of 2000. If anybody has a bead on those shows please contact me off list. As well, if RS is not allowing audience recording this tour it would be nice to know as some of my pals were intending to try, based on what RS said to me last year. Well, best of luck and see y'all at Falcon Ridge this year, what a blow out it should be Arlo, RS, LK, Jimmy LaFave, etc... I can't wait. Best wishes, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 09:48:17 -0400 From: Amy Subject: [RS] Ann Arbor redux Sara primarily played fiddle and sang lovely harmony - no one else can do for Richard's songs what Lucy can, but Sara's voice is rich and warm. She also has an impeccable ear (actually, perfect pitch.) She was possibly my favorite non-Lucy vocal accompanist to date. Some of the harmonies on Richard's older stuff were a little tentative, but considering that they'd never even rehearsed some of the songs...well, you'd never have known it. She also debuted on bass for one song (was it Born in the U.S.A. maybe? thanks law school, for destroying my ability to recall important details!) I wouldn't count on Greg singing too much, because the one time he joined in Richard was a bit incredulous. Apparently that too was something of a first. Greg played bouzouki and guitar and bass. I always think of him as the ideal session man (although I know he's an artist in his own right - no offense, Greg) because he's an excellent, versatile musician who does exactly what you need him to do and contributes in a huge way without ever upstaging the main player. Not as easy to find as you'd think! He plays piano on a few tracks of the record, but he stuck with the strings for the live show. I have to say, hearing Ascent was a highlight for me. Remember the Long Island gig a year or so ago when he started to play it and then pulled the plug? I was delighted, and it was as beautiful and soul- stirring as you'd imagine. "The new song", as he kept referring to Walden Well, was also a treat. I thought it was more of an overt statement than he generally makes. Not that that's a bad thing, it was just startling. Really, there were no low points. It was a pretty dynamite set. And yes, you can count on seeing the band for the whole tour. They're traveling by car, so I'm curious for reports from anyone who sees them by the time they get back to the East Coast - you'll have to let us know if they still seem to like one another. Also, I want a detailed report if he plays One Man's Arkansas at any of the gigs. I'll need to live vicariously. Richard had agreed to play it for me, but apparently realized the day of the show that it would be a disaster. I got Sparrow's Point instead (for the whole labor connection) - not a bad compromise, but still...you know. Not only did Greg produce some of the early albums, he co-produced this one. Which is another interesting point: I remember a discussion recently about what label would release this record. Turns out Richard's doing it all himself. He paid for the whole process and is handling the promotion and the distribution and what have you. So we need to tell all of our friends to buy early and often! To answer your question, Rich, it's not at all clear that Richard said no taping. The woman from the Ark who announced him made the standard, "turn off your cell phones, no flash photography..." speech and included "at the request of the artist, no taping." They've said that at every single show I've seen there (and it's listed as a policy on their website) so it could well be a general venue-specific policy. That said, if any of y'all have a recording of One Man's Arkansas (see above) or end up with one from this tour...you know where to find me! Theresa, anything else we should add? Or have I blathered on enough about the damn show? Probably the latter. Good of you to indulge me, guys. Cheers, Amy p.s. Bob, thanks for the shout-out. Hey you guys, The last item I posted about Richard's label affiliation was greeted with thunderous silence, so I assume that either no one knows, or no one cares about such issues. Fair enough. However, a little roux was added to this plot today, thickening it a bit. I received an e-mail from Signature Sounds, Richard's second (of 3? of 4?) label, saying that South of Delia was available through their web site. I assume this is strictly a distribution deal, and it makes a lot of sense considering that Signature, and Jim Olsen in particular, are huge supporters of Richard. Besides, it doesn't hurt to have folks drawn to their site to check out the rest of their roster, including the two other RS discs on the Signature label. And what about Hybrid? Their site announces the signing of Johnette Napolitano, formerly of Concrete Blonde, but no mention of Richard. A typo in Lucy's liner notes? A precursor to a deal not yet done? Gene F. Amy--how did you find the time? I'm a little surprised he didn't do more from the new disc, and that he's still ending with "Transit," but I'm really looking forward to the April 20 show, Tom Paxton notwithstanding. Btw, I ordered S of D as soon as I saw the info on how to do so, but still have not received it. Anyone else similarly situated? It will have to be playing as I read everyones' report on the concerts. I really would like to hear him with Greg and Sarah but I don't think it's gonna happen. Sob. All the concerts I've seen have been solo except for one w/ Rad. I believe tonight R is in cedar rapids. Had considered driving there but it didn't work out. I wonder if there will be any listers there.?? carrie in kc > > Btw, I ordered S of D as soon as I saw the info on how to do so, but still > have not received it. With regard to taping, I know a gentleman who records practically every show he attends at The Ark (and he's there probably 100 nights a year). He is set up to record either from the soundboard or via microphones from the audience. I also saw two other gentlemen at the show who tape from the audience exclusively (and I saw them putting their gear away). Anyway, my friend told me directly that Richard said no taping for this particular show. Still, given the fact that Richard usually allows taping (even from the soundboard, at least at The Ark), I imagine that he didn't want the show recorded since it was the first show of the tour and he hadn't had much (any) rehearsal time with Greg and Sara. If he'd played more from the new album, I would say that that might be the reason (I've seen a lot of artists who won't let you tape if they're debuting a new album). So Rich, I guess I'd tell your friends to bring their taping gear with them, but not to be disappointed if Richard says no.
