He was really good. Too bad he didn't > translate at the house concert for you. I can't see Garnet opening for > anyone or anyone opening for him. He was a powerful performer. He didn't appear to be too excited to be there. They announced he would play a full set but did only 4 songs. I saw Richard open for Garnet Rogers many years ago at the Ark (it was the Sparrow's Point tour for Richard). Garnet graciously let Richard extend his set by a couple songs when my wife and I made requests from the audience. Then he came out and put on an excellent show, full of generosity, warmth, and humor. Joe Moorehouse ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. There Goes Mavis 2. Walden Well (1st time played in public) 3. Reunion Hill 4. Sittin on Top of the World 5. Kenworth of My Dreams 6. Fishing 7. Deportee 8. Senor 9. Arrowhead 10. Hazels House 11. Waiting for the Storm 12. You Stay Here 13. Are You Happy Now? 14. Cold Missouri Waters 15. Last Fare of the Day 16. Transit 17. Walden Well (for the familiar face) 18. Waist Deep in the Big Muddy For those of you who expect to see Richard on this tour, you will not be disappointed. Still, I envy you. As this was the first show of the tour, he had a bit of rust, but he was in great humour, and the crowd was appropriately respectful. I was fearful of the bar buzz, but the presence of local WYEP DJ Rosemary Welch may have had a quieting effect on the sometime-cacophonous gang of roar. Highlights: Walden Well, a song he had never played in public before. On a few occasions, Richard asked, Has the familiar face arrived?, and it was anyones guess to whom he was referencing. Then, late in the show, he revealed that his eldest son is an undergrad at Pitt, and he had been looking for him. As this was a 7:00 P.M. show, you cant blame the lad for his late arrival. Once Richard confirmed his sons presence, he wanted to play the new one for him (again). Twas a treat to hear it a second time seems to be a call to action to change the world in any way that your talents might enable you. I first saw Richard in Irvington in the fall of 92 and my wife and I use to sing our lungs out on Kenworth, so it was a joy to do it again. N.B.: Were I in Dublin or Cork or even Shrewsbury, I think the crowd would happily sing along to the songs that they knew well. In Pittsburgh, I wash shushed for my excited response to the arrival of RU Happy Now? Kiljoys are everywhere, though it must be said that Club Cafi is exceptionally small and the setting really played to Richards strengths. Im quite tired but I must add that Deportee gave me a sense of satisfaction at the marriage of Guthrie lyrics and melody, joined with Shindells soulfulness and respect for the downtrodden. All in all, there was beauty in the air. Once again, he made the mistake (happily) of asking for requests. A torrent of song titles burst from the dam of our collective conscious (Bridey calling out Best Western when she really meant Transit), and Richard heard a woman say she had driven down from Buffalo. For my show? (or something to that effect). Well, I have to play your request. It was Fishing, with a neverbeforeheardtuning, and it was brilliant My favourite moment was Last Fare, however. Always brings tears, first sadness, then joy As Amsterdam makes us a place, I ask about her name. We all laugh when he says, Hope and she says Grace. Yeah, grace Pedropaz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2007 21:43:39 -0600 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?john_cl=E9irigh?= Subject: Re: [RS] California California Doh! It was a really outstanding show. I'd seen Mary a few years ago at Falcon Ridge and thought "she's pretty good, but..." No "but..." this time; she was outstanding. Her songs get better and better--she has quite a few new songs--and her stage presence is wonderful. And Eliza is always great.
