I screwed up. ............................................................................ >>This morning ( Wednesday ) Claudia Marshall of the great WFUV said that >>Richard will be " in residency" at The Living Room ( a New York City club >>) in April. I swear she said April. Does this make any sense to any of >>you? I can't find anything about it on either richardshindell.com or >>livingroomny.com << Wouldn't that be loverly? Unfortunately, it's Richard Julian who will be there every Tuesday evening in April. Richard Shindell will be in New York City one day, and one day only, April 20 for the rescheduled double bill with Tom Paxton. ......................................................................... Ah. That explains my mistake. Thank you Gene. That's the last time I post something I heard at 6:30am while holding a 90 percent empty quart bottle of gin. Whiskey next time I promise. I like Richard Julian though - so it's still of interest to me - even after it's been translated into english. .......................................................................... By the way, WFUV may be great, but Claudia Marshall is something less. I've had a distaste for her ever since she made an extremely unflattering, and totally unnecessary and uncalled for comment about the opening act while introducing Patty Griffin at Town Hall a couple of years ago. I listen to her show every morning while having breakfast for lack of an alternative, and hope for music and no talk. Or, even better, a guest host. ............................................................................ My sweet Claudia did this? I wasn't there - but I believe you at your word. Maybe Claudia was trying to be funny - and was speaking in real time - and kinda didn't think thru what she said? It's easy to get yourself in trouble if you try to be funny in front of a crowd and are not a comedy professional ( and even if you are ). I have grown to like Claudia Marshall a lot. She loves Richard and Dar and Susan Werner - and she's been very sweet in person on the two or three occasions I have met her in person ( fundraising, Falcon Ridge ). But DJs and people are funny. All the WFUV listener people I know usually have one DJ they just "can't stand". I assume it works the same way at all the other ( and there are not that many ) "Richard Shindell" friendly radio stations across the country. I can barely listen to commercial radio stations now - and I LOVED the radio as a teenager. An extremely limited play-list, too many commercials, and often a mean obnoxious DJ and a couple of pathetic toadies. Morning radio in New York City can be awful. God knows how a teenager today can learn about good music - or the history of rock and folk and jazz. I personally think this is part of the reason that iPods have become so popular. Without public and college radio I'd be lost. ( No... I'm not about to launch into a fundraiser ). Obviously, Richard and Dar and Lucy and everyone all completely depend on public and college radio. If WFUV ever went away - many of the folk venues would soon find themselves drawing crowds only half the size of the crowds they draw now. I sometimes wish I had tried to work in the radio business - but I suspect I woulda hated being on the inside of a commercial radio station - kinda like working inside a sausage factory. Porn may not pay that well - but at least I sleep well at night. see ya... Bob P. ( Yeah. I know. Comedy is best left to professionals. ) ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. I rush out to the mailbox every day in anticipation. Second, I decided to make a post before the RS concert reports start coming in. Believe Richard starts his spring tour tomorrow in PIT. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to attend and prospects for travel aren't looking good to any other upcoming performances. But, you never know. In the meantime I wanted to share info on some concerts and house concerts, all in Lawrence, which I WAS able to attend recently. Willy Porter - at a bar. He seemed to just be going through the motions. I requested -You Stay Here- and he said he'd do it but didn't. When I asked later he said it wasn't the right crowd. There actually weren't too many in attendance until towards the end when all the college students began arriving to hear the battle of 4 rock bands starting later. Lucy Kaplanski - At a church. Always good. Got her new cd but haven't had a chance to listen yet. Oh yes, Garnet Rogers opened for her. He didn't come across very well and I had trouble understanding some of his words. He's better on cd. Edie Carey - At her friend's (Fran Snyder) home. He is also a muscian. About 30 people were there. Wine and beer flowed and the kitchen was full of food. What a deal for $10!! Of course I pitched in more. Edie was good. It is so great to hear these artists up close with lots of audience interaction and an intermission where you can chat with the artist. For any of you who haven't had the opportunity to go to a house concert, this is the primo venue! Jeff Black - at a house concert w/ less than 50 people. Just coffee, tea, and cookies here. Jeff was terrific. What a strong, energetic voice! You don't get the full impact when listening to his cds. He was so thrilled to have a captive, responsive audience after the previous night in a bar without heat, he played well over his scheduled time. He had as much fun as we did. His guitar is all chipped around the sound hole from playing it so hard, and I'm sure the hosts had to have their piano tuned after he played a bunch of songs on it. If you get a chance to see Jeff Black do it. You won't be disappointed. I'm sounding like RG talking about Antje Duvekot. Antje Duvekot - Yes, RG, at a house concert. Same one as Jeff. RG is correct.. She is really good. Everyone loved her. She was very friendly and personable and we chatted quite a bit during the intermission. I was telling her how I found out about her on this list from a huge fan and so she wrote him a quick note. RG send me your address off list and I'll mail it to you along with some photos. She played a new song for the first time, which she said was her attempt at writing a happy song. It wasn't exactly happy, but it was a very good song. Another great evening at a bargain price. That's about it....and that's who I'm listening to these days until my new cd arrives in the mail. carrie in kc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2007 15:49:45 -0600 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?john_cl=E9irigh?= Subject: Delia arrival (was: Re: [RS] concerts etc) kunigunda wrote: First of all....has anyone received their pre-ordered cd- S of D yet? My credit card has yet to be billed for it. - -- John Cleirigh | Boulder, CO | 303/590.4290http://johncleirigh.com/ | http://myspace.com/johncleirigh ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2007 18:52:42 -0400 From: "Chris Foxwell" Subject: [RS] Cancion Educativa? Just a funny story semi-related to Richard, while impatiently waiting for my CD preorder: I do volunteer ESL teaching at a n rganization serving the Latino and Hispanic Boston-area community, and I thought it would be cool to play "Cancion Sencilla" and have the class transform the lyrics into English and explain the song. I figured it was the perfect tune: a nice simple song, slow and easy to translate into English, and all about learning a new language to boot. It went over really well, they loved it. (And, to a one, they were impressed by Richard's accent, heh). Potential new RS fans?? We'll see... Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, possibly stale news for some here: Susan Werner has formed a new project/group called "Barbie," and is beginning a limited road tour. The group's material (all written by Susan) is pretty much entirely religious in nature, performed in a half-folk, half-gospel, one-quarter blues style. It contains both earnest "symbolists' gospel" tunes and irreverent "evangelical agnostic" songs. (Her own descriptions.) I got a sneak peek at a concert/rehearsal late last night--volunteering at Club Passim has some nice fringe benefits, heh--and it sounded terrific, every song. Especially with Coleen Sexton and Trina Hamlin on backup vocals. I'm not sure how definite certain aspects of the project are, such as the name "Barbie"; Susan used it to keep the show on the down-low, and I have no idea if she intends to stick with it. Ditto for the band roster; Coleen and Trina are performing here tonight, so they may just have been in the area, although I kinda doubt it. Regardless, keep an eye/ear out for the band and catch them if you can, they're really great. - --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us).
