Hello, Richard was explaining There Goes Mavis, and referred to the canary named Mavis Rara, which he said was a Latin joke. I never learned any Latin, so what's the joke there? If I'm spelling it wrong, then that would explain why Google had nothing. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. "Avis" is "bird" in Latin, and "rara avis" is "rare bird"--a term used (in my experience) more often metaphorically for an unusual, perhaps eccentric, person (or maybe object) one encounters. Really psyched to see Richard for the first time in many years. But ... given that it's the first time he's been in the UK in a decade, and that he'll have spent 11 hours travelling nearly 6000 miles from Argentina (if he's coming direct), why isn't he getting out and about a bit more? Four of his six appearances are within 35 miles drive of London, and he gets no further north or west than Shrewsbury. Not very handy if you're in Scotland! Perhaps some entrepreneurial soul can tempt him out of the Home Counties on August 27 or 28?" It's actually very difficult to get any gigs anywhere at that time of year. Many venues shut down for six to eight weeks in July/August as much of the folk fraternity head off for various festivals. He's over here first and foremost to appear at the festival in Shrewsbury (which is very prestigious). Moreover, it's quite possible he may be thinking of basing himself at one location for the four dates in the London area and using the time to have a short vacation (rather than hiking hundreds of miles across the country). Who knows? I suppose we should assume the agent who booked it has done so to Richard's requirements. Howdy all . . . I'll be making the drive up to Santa Monica for the McCabe's show on 4/7. This being my first trip up there, and therefore not being familiar with the area, can any locals fill me in on the local pre-show eatery options? Also, I was thinking that I might throw a guitar in my trunk in case any local RS listers might like to find a place to get together for some afternoon playing, maybe including a few "RG shows you how to play Richard like Richard" tips and tricks. Just a thought. Feel free to drop me a line off-list to discuss. RG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 19:59:14 -0700 From: "Matthew Bullis" Subject: Re: [RS] McCabe's 4/7. Wow, sounds great. I've always wanted to visit there, and also haven't seen Richard live. However, it won't happen this time round, since I live in Phoenix. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail?
