During the intermission, Ellis plopped down next to me and started chatting with me. He was really gushing about Antje! He said he wanted her to open for him as much as possible. I bet he's been a big boost for her career. Antje sings a song about Judas' father throwing him against a wall. Very moving song. Anais Mitchell is no slouch either. Her voice reminds me of Heather Eatman and so do her songs. They stay with you for days. On another note, I just found out Cat Stevens aka Yusaf something, has a new album! His music was very important to me growing up and I was heartbroken when he gave it all up. Well, he's back. I heard one of his new songs on NPR. Sounds just like always, great! I'll echo the recommendations for Jack Harris and Antje Duvekot. Both are excellent. But Anais Mitchell is in a league of her own. Best songwriter I've discovered since Dave Carter in 1998. Her use of language is almost on a par with his. The rhymes, assonances, alliteration, etc. are very inventive, yet natural. She's the only person I've ever heard use a palindromic internal rhyme: "the scaffold of the old cafe". In addition to her folkie songwriting, Anais has written an opera, setting the Orpheus myth in a Depression/Prohibition-era mining town, which will debut in six performances in Vermont in December. The songs I've heard from it have melodic and harmonic twists that go well beyond what I've ever heard in the folk genre. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2006 10:06:50 -0600 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Re: New Find Oh boy! Sounds just like always, great!<< I think his new name is Yusuf Islam, and he probably wisely left his last name off the album. He attracted a lot of attention years ago by his alleged support of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie because of Rushdie's negative portrayal of Muhammed in the Satanic Verses. I don't know if he actually supported it, or merely stated the law which authorized the fatwa, but he ended up on a terrorist watch list of some sort and was refused entry into the U.S. Seemed odd to me that the writer of "Peace Train" could support the death sentence of another artist, but it is a wild world. I listen to WFUV all day at work, and have done so for some time. In all that time, I think I have heard Cat Stevens less than a handful of times, which, I found odd. I did hear a track from the new album, so perhaps they've moved on from what appeared to be widespread villification.
